We are Raices Unidas
Established in 1996, students at Minneapolis Community and Technical College created the first Latinx student organization. A student name Jesse Ramirez approached academic advisor, Rosa Shannon to start a student club. Since then, Shannon’s position was a Latinx Advisor and Recruiter for MCTC. The Latinx student population was growing, therefore a safe space where students could come together and share their experiences was needed. The group was able to get money to go the Chicano Conference at Moorhead Student University where they got the opportunity to network with Chicano students that attended Moorhead State University.
The first club became to be known as the Chicano Student Association. This club came together to create a presence on the MCTC campus and to allow our Latinx growing population to feel like MCTC was a great place to pursue their post-secondary education. Through this club we created our constitution that stated that we are "a coalition group of student of various Spanish speaking countries at MCTC." This group founded the idea of to encourage, support and respect all ethnic background and nationalities, with a special emphasis on students of the Chicano/Latino/Hispanic ancestry. It is through this club that our mission became "to be an agent for positive change and growth through communication and understanding among the various ethnic groups that made up the MCTC community." Our main purpose was to cultivate this awareness through peer support and cultural activities to make our presence on campus and to welcome the Latinx community to MCTC.
