Can you spot the difference between strobes and continuous light?
Here we show a two-light setup with a larger soft light in the front and hard hair light coming from the back left, but using strobes for one setup and continuous lights for the other.
The strobe images ended up more contrasty as the power we were using could reach higher (1000W). For continuous our lights max out at 600W leaving a much softer image that mixes with the natural light.
Let us know in the comments which you prefer!

Golden hour is the best hour!
Lighting series is back! Big thanks to our model for helping us out with this one. We created a pure white background that wrapped around the subject by placing a 5’ octa behind them and a white V-flat facing the front of them, and behind camera. This results in a very pretty ethereal airy lighting look using only one light! Let us know below what kind of lighting you’d like us to break down next. Or stop by the studio to try this one out!

Calling all photographers, models, and all neighbors! We’ve been loving seeing all of your protest signs out in the wild calling for ICE out and justice for our neighbors. Let’s have an evening of community and make some photos of you and your signs! Bring your signs and your camera if you’d like. We’ll provide the moody lighting, more sign making supplies, and snacks.
Free for all to attend, please reserve tickets here. We’ll also be collecting food/supply donations for a north side food shelf!
We’ve loved seeing memories made, friendships created, and ideas coming to fruition this year in 2025. Always a joy to see portrait sessions to capture long lasting memories from awkward family holiday photos to editorial collaborations. Hosting our artist residency and photo meetups this year allowed us to curate a space for the photo community to create and connect. All in a space we continuously strive to improve as we see the studio come to life with our new kitchenette, bathroom, patio area, and brick walkways. We’re excited for what’s to come for Studio Apparatus in 2026 and we hope to see your lovely faces in the upcoming year! 🤍
