Mapping Prejudice

At Mapping Prejudice, we are so grateful for all of our supporters and collaborators. Thanks to University of Minnesota student Gracie Stockton for this thoughtful video report explaining the mission behind our effort.

University of Minnesota Libraries

Ryan Mattke, head of the John R. Borchert Map Library has received the Polaris Leadership Award from the MN GIS/LIS Consortium at its conference last month — and the Libraries' Mapping Prejudice project received a Commendation from the Governor at the same conference.

Minding the Maps

We were featured in a story from CLAgency this spring!

Minnesota Experience

Thank you, University of Minnesota Libraries staff for hosting us and the Mapping Prejudice team today for a screening and Q&A of the film "Jim Crow of the North."

We are excited about the future of data and archival usage in storytelling!

Mapping Prejudice

"This is a form of healing," one woman declared after seeing Jim Crow of the North. "It makes me feel validated in my experience. . .This is in law – it’s concrete. I am validated as a 22-year-old to take back history and change the narrative and reclaim truth."

‘Jim Crow of the North’ film screening

Stop by Andersen Library on February 18 to see an advanced screening of this TPT documentary about the work of Mapping Prejudice! Attend a FREE advance screening February 18 of Jim Crow of the North, a Twin Cities Public Television documentary film that is based on the work of the Mapping Prejudice Project at the University of Minnesota.

Mapping Prejudice

Thank you to Representative Jim Davnie, who gave Mapping Prejudice the opportunity to testify last night on this legislation, which will allow Minnesotans to renounce racial covenants they find attach to their property. Covenants may have been illegal for fifty years but we are still living with their legacies. Homeowners feel a moral injury when they find these racist deeds. This gives them a chance to reject these hateful sentiments that have done so much to damage our communities.

Better late than never? The had these materials returned last week. They were checked out just over 40 years ago -- in December 1977!

Mapping Prejudice

Esri published a piece about our Mapping Prejudice project!

Thanks to David Gadsden for this thoughtful piece about our work to make the invisible visible. Our covenants map is not an academic exercise. This digital map is meant to provide a new window on the history of structural racism. We also hope that Minneapolis residents will use it to devise remedies for existing disparities. Sign on to our website and find out how you can help.

Minnesota Population Center

Dr. Kirsten Delegard and the Mapping Prejudice team presents at today's MPC Seminar. They are creating the first comprehensive map of racial covenants in an American city. "Racial covenants did Jim Crow work in Minneapolis. They quietly created structured, institutional racism and segregation in a 'desegregated' northern city."

Tracing the legacy of prejudice

Excellent article in the Southwest Journal about our Mapping Prejudice project by volunteer Steve Brandt, who describes his experience transcribing racial covenants.

A redlining map of Minneapolis from the 1930s. Related to the Mapping Prejudice Project.

Researchers work to uncover Minneapolis' discriminatory housing past

New article in the Minnesota Daily about our Mapping Prejudice project! Scholars from the University of Minnesota and Augsburg College have analyzed over 1.4 million historic Minneapolis housing deeds and found racist language in over 20,000 documents. While these racial covenants forbidding the sale of property to people of color are no longer legally enforceable, rese...
