As America marks 250 years since its founding, this anniversary allows us to reflect on the many communities that have helped shape our country. Muslims have been part of the American story for centuries, yet much of this history remains unfamiliar to many Americans. This year, the Islamic Resource Group (IRG) celebrates 25 years of building understanding between Muslim Americans and the broader community. We believe this is a fitting time to share more of that story.

We invite you to The American Story You Haven’t Heard, a special showing of The Great Muslim American Road Trip. This nationally broadcast documentary series follows Muslim American couple Mona Haydar and Sebastian Robins on a 3,000-mile journey along Route 66. Along the way, they meet people from different backgrounds and explore the long history of Muslims in America and their contributions to the country.

IRG has also spent many years documenting Muslim history here in Minnesota. Through the Minnesota Muslim Experience project, IRG recorded interviews with 40 Muslim Minnesotans. Twenty-five of these individuals were featured in Tracks in the Snow, IRG’s traveling portrait and oral history exhibit about the Muslim experience in Minnesota since 1880. It is now permanently displayed in Room 316 of the Minnesota State Capitol. The Star Tribune wrote about this work in Muslim roots run deep in U.S. and in Minnesota.
