𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐋𝐆: I wanted to find a space on campus to connect with people from similar cultural identities and experiences. I found that in SLG through sisterhood and friendship. It has been amazing to be a part of this strong sisterhood, and I can’t wait for what’s next 🤍🙈

It is with heavy hearts that we share that sister Sonia “Sunshine” Casale #38 passed away. Her light and spirit will live on in all who knew her, as she truly left an impact on those she met.

Sonia was the embodiment of positivity and enthusiasm. She truly had an infectious spirit, and you always felt good after leaving a conversation with her. Always supportive, you could count on Sonia to bring light to even the darkest situations.

Sonia was an amazing mother to baby J, and loved her husband Matt dearly. They were her pride and joy.

Sonia was the part of the Iota line, Gamma Daughter to Christina “Destiny” Oey, and Gamma Mom to Zuri “Gizhewaadizi” Bender. She was the proud deuce of the Iota Line, and held that position proudly — you can ask any other deuce that knew her. She was even nicknamed “Deucey Deuce!”

During her time as an undergrad, Sonia helped grow the Sigma Alpha chapter to where it is today. She loved spending time with her line sisters, strolling in the Cinco de Mayo parade, and being involved on campus. Sonia was also a founder of the SLG Twin Cities Alumni Association and was active for many years.

Sonia held a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota majoring in Public Health, Family Social Science, and Life Science. She also held a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health in Public Health Administration and Policy, and a Mini MBA in Project Management from the University of St. Thomas.

The world is a better place because of her smile. Hermanas por vida, en esta y en la otra.🩷💜

Our sister, # 𝟏𝟔𝟐 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐢 “𝐗ó𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐥” 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐨, spent the 2025 Fall semester in Madrid, Spain, where she studied psychology, deepened her understanding of research, and experienced a new culture firsthand. Being immersed in a different country allowed her to see psychology beyond the classroom and appreciate how culture shapes people’s experiences.

During the semester, she also had the opportunity to travel to places like Greece and Italy, making memories that extended far beyond academics. As a first-generation student, this experience was a valuable part of her academic and personal development.
