Today I share with you one of my oldest choreographies: “Lutte des femmes - Batay fanm - Women fight” to celebrate all the warriors especially the women warriors who fought valiantly at the Battle of Vertières (Haitian Creole: Batay Vètyè) the last great battle of the Haitian Revolution under the direction of Jean Jacques Dessalines. Luttes des femmes is a piece I created for the “Chimin kwaze” project by Celia Weiss Bambara in 2003, the same year I was crowned Miss Videomax!
This choreography is inspired by the rhythm of “Mayi” from my Haitian tradition and “Makulele” from the Brazilian tradition.
The contribution of women around the world is often underestimated and undervalued. Many women contributed to the success of the Haitian revolution, but they were not recognized and celebrated like their male counterparts. Over the past twenty years, my artistic work has been used all over the world without any recognition or credit. This is why I dedicate this choreography to all women around the world to continue fighting for their rights so that our contribution to society is properly valued, respected and credited.
Ayibobo pou tout fanm!
