The MPS School Board convenes for a Regular Business Meeting on Tuesday, October 10th at 5:30PM. This is one of many opportunities for us to advocate for our students. The Board hears comments from 25 community members at the beginning of each meeting. Pre-registration happens at noon on Friday for 15 of the open slots. Ten of the slots are reserved for walk-ups the day of the meeting. For more specific information, visit the School Board website.
Speaking directly to the Board is the best way to be heard by the district. If you would like to comment on behalf of Olson’s needs, please do. If you would like support in planning or delivering your comments, reach out to us via email, Facebook, or Instagram.

The school year is underway! It has been amazing to have the school bustling and busy again. However, the Olson community still has many needs going unfulfilled.

The school year is almost here! As we spend this weekend resting and preparing, we want to bring your attention to a very important issue facing our community.
Olson has over 85 students who qualify for ELL services, including many who are new to the country and have very limited English language skills. Unfortunately, Olson does not have any ELL teachers on staff. OMS supposed to have a full time and a part time teacher, but the positions are unfilled. OMS has only one staff member who is fluent in Spanish. This staff member has to take on the responsibility of interpreting any time a Spanish-speaking family needs support. Olson families also speak Hmong, Somali, Amharic, Oromo, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, and more. We believe that all families deserve to be able to communicate with schools and teachers.
To our knowledge, the district does not have any concrete, sustainable plans in place to support the needs of these students. In addition to the school board and superintendent, the departments directly involved in these decisions include the Multilingual Department and the Office of Latine Achievement.
This is where you come in. Please share this information widely to raise awareness and reach community members and organizations who can help. Multilingual people are encouraged to apply for open positions or volunteer. Finally, contact district leaders to let them know our students deserve an accessible, supportive, high-quality education.
