For more than five decades, Mildred Howard () has transformed everyday materials into meditations on memory, place, identity, and history. Mildred Howard: Poetics of Memory, on view through October 11 at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA), is the first major museum survey to examine the breadth of that practice. Not long after the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts opened on Deer Isle, Maine, in 1961, a Maine school superintendent stopped by to visit. “What’s all this temporary construction?” he asked Francis “Fran” Merritt, the school’s founding director.

The construction that the superintendent was referring to was a simple group of wooden studios and cabins connected by decks and walkways, perched on sloping granite ledges overlooking the islands of Jericho Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. This simple campus was designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, and years later it was recognized as one of the most significant modernist buildings in the world. It was innovative at the time and certainly not what you would expect to encounter in a spruce fir forest on the coast of Maine. In Jesse Krimes’s () quilts, absence is the subject of the intimate domestic scenes he stitches together from textile and clothing scraps. A child’s room rendered in soft yellows and browns in Florence feels at once deeply private and instantly recognizable, with a rocking horse, a crib, and toys scattered across a patterned rug. But as in the rest of his Elegy Quilts series, empty space in the composition draws attention to what is lost when incarceration takes someone away from home.

He debuted his newest piece, Riverside, alongside a selection from the series in Jesse Krimes: Elegy Quilts, on view at the Fabric Workshop and Museum () in Philadelphia through November 1. In partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia, a mural of the new quilt was also installed in the Spring Arts District in the Callowhill neighborhood in early June. Just off the town square in Jackson, Wyoming, visitors step into Sing Hat Company () expecting a retail shop. Instead, they find a working hat studio: steam rising from felt, hands shaping brims, and hats slowly taking shape. Founded in 2018, Sing Hat Company has become a place where visitors can see traditional hat-making up close in the heart of Jackson, a major tourist destination at the foot of the Teton Mountains.

Owner Christy Sing Robertson grew up in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas before moving west 20 years ago, eventually settling in Wyoming after experiencing what she describes as a sense of calling. “God has spoken to me a few times in my life,” she says. “One time was about moving to Wyoming, and another was that I should make hats.” Link in bio to read the full article. Tlingit artist and wood carver James Johnson () grew up in Juneau, Alaska, surrounded by the culture, stories, and landscapes that shape his art. In Tlingit culture, he explains, there is no separate word for “art.” The carvings, bentwood boxes, and ceremonial objects associated with Pacific Northwest Coast design are inseparable from identity, history, and daily life. “I’m connected to my ancestors when I carve,” Johnson says. “The spiritual aspect of it, I feel that connection.” Link in bio to read the full article.
