The Burroughs Equity Team & administration are partnering with other local schools to invite our community to learn about a little-known part of the history of our neighborhood. Please read below & plan to join us on February 10!

Join us at Justice Page Middle School on Tuesday, February 10 for a captivating live event. Dr. Lehman, the author of a 2024 book about Eliza Winston, will share the story of Eliza's escape from enslavement while being kept by her enslavers on the shores of Lake Harriet and the Mississippi River. Her courage and resilience will inspire and move you, and learning about local upstanders in 1860 helps provide a roadmap for Minneapolis residents 165 years later.

Don’t miss this unique chance to hear this little-known piece of Minneapolis history firsthand from the author himself—because stories like Eliza’s deserve to be remembered, shared, and celebrated.

On August 22, 1860, an enslaved woman from Mississippi named Eliza Winston petitioned for her freedom before a judge in Minnesota--and she won. After she left the state for Canada, the abolitionists who had helped her told and retold the story, emphasizing their own actions; their detractors claimed they had used Winston as a pawn. For more than 150 years, historians' accounts have emphasized the mobs who battled in the streets after the ruling, focusing on the implications of the events for Minnesota politics rather than Winston's own story. With It Took Courage, Christopher P. Lehman helps set the record straight.

With one more day before winter break, we are celebrating some of the fun we’ve had this month in 3 posts: tours for new families, our spirit days (some were “underground” because only staff knew about them), our Bobcat Choir concert from this morning, and yesterday’s All School Sing. This post includes pictures of our tour guides, our pancake party, and staff dress up days!

Today was the first official day back for our Burroughs teachers. We would like to give a huge thank you to Heather’s for donating a delicious breakfast! (Please thank them the next time you are there for a meal or treat!) We then spent time exploring Wayfinder (our tool for social emotional teaching) and updating our AmazeWorks plans for the year! Enjoy a few pictures and videos from breakfast and our team handshakes!

In order to catch up with all of the things our teacher have learned in their LETRS (science of reading) training, I am taking the course this summer. Today I worked in one of the music buildings at the U while my son attended orchestra camp. I loved hearing a student practicing in a practice room across the hallway - stay in band and orchestra, Bobcats!! (Teachers - feel free to quiz me on graphemes, phonemes, blends, digraphs, and sight words vs. irregular words! Unit 4 starts tomorrow.)

Burroughs 5th Grade Clap Out 2025 06/07/2025

Our Burroughs Bobcats class of 2025 had a great day yesterday! Enjoy their “Clap Out” as they headed from graduation to their party! (And sorry about the angle for the first few - I was busy cheering and didn’t realize I was cutting off their heads at first!)

At the PTA’s first annual Glow Dance Party, there was a silent auction to raise funds to replace our old PE mats. Many of the items were experiences with our staff members - check out all of the cool things our Bobcats got to do! (And feel free to donate by clicking this link: https://burroughspta.org/ )
