International student on possible deportation: 'Why now?'

Our very own, Jonas Bergmann, a Danish citizen and student at Augsburg University, joined Ayman Mohyeldin at MSNBC to provide his response after the Trump administration announced plans to remove international students if classes would be offered only online this fall.

Thank you for sharing your voice, Jonas, and for standing up for yourself and the international student community!

Sign the Petition

To our community and beyond,

2020 has proven how strong of a community we have. Furthermore, the past months have shown us what can happen when people call for action and stand against racism, ignorance and abuse of power. As Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released a Temporary Final Rule including restrictions on F1 visa holders, our community is again called to action.

The modifications are restricting non-immigrant students to participate in a hybrid semester, including in-person and online classes for fall semester 2020, even though we are in the midst of a pandemic. Augsburg University is together with ISSS working on a plan that will allow international students to continue, or start, with their academic journey whether they are here in the U.S still or have had to return to their home country.. Augsburg University is committed to come together, once again, to face these challenges and successfully comply with the restrictions.

We are calling upon our community to do what they can in order to support the international community at Augsburg, but also beyond the Augsburg community. There is a petition running and we encourage everyone to sign and share (find the link in the bottom of this post).

We cannot and will not allow this to happen in silence.

With power,
International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)

Ways To Help

To our community and beyond,

For the past 14 days, our home has experienced peaceful protests after the horrific murder of an innocent black man, George Floyd. The violent racism that persists in our city comes at a time when our communities of color already are experiencing a pandemic, which already has proven the system to disadvantage them.

We are calling upon our fellow community to help the affected people. It is in times like these, that our Augsburg community has proven itself to be powerful and loyal. Augsburg University has provided all students with various resources that can be found in Inside-Augsburg.

There is a great need for volunteering and donations across the city, please find ways to help at the bottom of this post. There are also ways to contribute to the cause without donations and volunteering. The past two weeks, the peaceful demonstrations have proven to open conversations that many outside the black community have struggled to have. By talking about systematic racism and inequality for minorities, it forces individuals to take action and reflect upon their privileges. It may be the most powerful tool in combating societal issues.

As we continue to peacefully demand equality and justice in our city and across the Nation, we recognise the demanding times this is for our fellow international students. Our ISSS office has planned a Zoom meeting at the end of this week, along with spiritual guidance from our Campus Ministry. Our ISSS workers and ISO (International Student Organization) remain open for all inquiries, support and guidance.

We stand together as a community committed to justice, love and for the well-being of our entire community.

Hi auggies! Great news from ISO!

ISO is organizing a spring break trip to Chicago! We plan on taking the students on a tour of Chicago, particularly exploring cultural group present in the city. ISO wants to take it a step further and expose international students to more of the United States, so they can get a more holistic view of the different cultures represented in the US.

We are still in the process of planning and looking for people who are interested to be on the committee team, but for now please get excited and help spread the news to your friends! General members, non-international students are welcome to join us! 😃
