Under the direction of Dr. Gail Weinhold and the School of Education, a group of 12 NCU Education students recently participated in a one-week international teaching practicum. NCU’s School of Education has an ongoing partnership with Doulos Discovery School in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic and during the week students worked side-by-side with students and teachers in this experiential learning school that is changing lives and creating future leaders in a country where education is often highly undervalued, poorly operated, and where quality education is usually only attainable for the upper class. Doulos serves the community is a unique way with a 50/50 approach. Fifty percent of the students pay full tuition and fifty percent attend through sponsorships mostly from individuals in the U.S.. This creates a unique environment where the classes mix, bilingual education is thriving, learning is integrated with the Christian faith, and when a student graduates, they can change the course of their family’s future for generations. We were honored to be a part of their mission and have caught the Doulos vision and hope to share it with everyone back home!
