We are happy to announce a big feature update on IPUMS NHGIS. We've greatly expanded users' ability to restrict table data requests to specific states.
Users can now select "geographic extents" for any request of table data, including our time series tables, and for any geographic levels that nest within states (counties, places, census tracts, etc.). NHGIS will then produce data files limited to the areas in the selected extents.
The extent options include all states, state equivalents (e.g., District of Columbia), and historical territories (e.g., Northwest Territory).
Previously, most NHGIS table data were available only as nationwide files. Users could select extents only for block and block-group tables, and this feature was a little hard to find, appearing 3 pages into the Data Finder on the Review & Submit page.
We've moved the extent selection to a more prominent place on the Data Finder's Options page (see screenshot). The extent selection pop-up window also now indicates which extents are available for the source tables and time series tables currently in the Data Cart.
(While recent NHGIS datasets typically include data for all states, DC, and Puerto Rico, extent availability varies a lot across the entire history of U.S. census data. This was a big reason why it's taken us a while to add this functionality! NHGIS data requests can include many combinations of data types and sources. We wanted the UI to provide some good cues about how extent availability varies, and then our extract system needed to handle all the permutations of availability. We think we've come up with a robust solution for table data... Now we just hope to do the same for our GIS files in the not-too-distant future!)
Check out the new functionality at https://www.nhgis.org/.
Coders note: The new functionality is _also_ available through the IPUMS API, ipumsr, and ipumspy, though we're still working on some documentation updates for those.

David Van Riper did a great job explaining the importance of access to public data on Marketplace. Democratizing access to the world’s social and economic data for current and future generations - that's core to our mission.
Why is access to federal data important? - Marketplace
Losing access to federal data is like taking "an X-ray machine away from a doctor," said David Van Riper at IPUMS.

When some of the most valuable datasets in human history briefly vanished from U.S. government websites, it felt like watching the Library of Alexandria go up in smoke.
