As important as traditional translation is as an entry point for effective communication with limited English populations, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Written material is only effective to the extent that it can be comprehended, digested, and acted upon. Depending on what you're trying to communicate and to whom, cultural factors and varying levels of literacy in your target audience could render even a well-translated document next to useless. Transcreation is a consulting process that leads to the adaptation of existing material for increased accessibility and cultural resonance. For example, a lengthy instructional handout may be better received in video format or with pared down text and incorporation of graphics; a translated brochure might feel more welcoming with photos that reflect the intended reader; an informed consent process could be more “informed” if accompanied by a plain language supplement with infographics; a dietary guide for management of some chronic illnesses may be more effective if adapted to include more varied cultural meal patterns and cuisines.

Por muy importante que sea la traducción tradicional como punto de entrada para una comunicación eficaz con comunidades que no dominan el inglés, no es una solución única. El material escrito sólo es eficaz en la medida en que pueda ser comprendido, digerido y puesto en práctica. Dependiendo de lo que intente comunicar y a quién, los factores culturales y los distintos niveles de alfabetización de su público objetivo pueden hacer que su documento, aunque sea bien traducido, se vuelva prácticamente inútil. La transcreación es un proceso de consultoría que lleva a la adaptación del material existente para aumentar la accesibilidad y la resonancia cultural. Por ejemplo, un manual largo puede ser mejor recibido en formato de video o con un texto reducido y la incorporación de elementos gráficos; un folleto traducido podría resultar más acogedor con fotos que reflejen al lector previsto; un proceso de consentimiento informado podría ser más "informado" si se acompaña de un suplemento de lenguaje sencillo con infografías; una guía dietética para el manejo de algunas enfermedades crónicas puede ser más eficaz si se adapta para incluir patrones de comida y cocinas culturales más variadas.

False cognates, also known as false friends, can be one of the trickier (and funnier) aspects of learning a language. If English is your first language, have you ever announced that you’re pregnant (embarazada) when you’re really just embarrassed? If Spanish is your first language, have you ever done a doubletake at food packaging that seems to list condoms (pr*********os) among its contents?

Puerta Abierta’s roots are in traditional translation—the conversion of text from one language to another. Sounds simple, right? On the contrary! Translation is a specialized skill that is far more complicated than replacing words in another language. It requires excellent writing skills, careful consideration of the context, tone, and intent behind the source text, and an understanding of the target audience. To ensure the most accurate and natural sounding result possible, we work in teams of one native English speaker and one native Spanish speaker, discussing nuances sentence by sentence, putting a great deal of thought into our word choices and phrasing, and passing each text through several rounds of editing and proofing.
