Sick and tired of being sick and tired? All of us can get stuck in a rut, and find it really challenging to break out of old habits, especially those that give us an immediate dopamine rush and a distraction from uncomfortable emotions. The cycle of seeking relief prevents us from establishing new habits and creating new experiences.

We all use mechanisms to self-soothe from time to time. Buffering is a totally normal response to stress. However, when a buffer becomes a compulsive, habitual activity that gives us more negatives than positives, it is time to address it. With some inner work and focus, we can get to the root of the behavior - most often an uncomfortable thought or emotion - and break the cycle.

Let's face it. We all buffer from time to time; it's perfectly human and normal. Food, alcohol, retail therapy, overwork, the list goes on and on. When the buffer becomes habitual or overused, it can impact our health, finances, job performance and relationships. Our friends and family might nag us about it, and what is our response? Buffer some more. In our attempts to avoid uncomfortable emotions with our buffer of choice, we unconsciously give our power away to the buffer, and create a stronger neural pathway to continue the behavior. The good news - you can break the ‘buffer and suffer’ cycle.

Nothing is more liberating than understanding, and truly feeling, a sense of personal power. All too often, we give our personal power away. To be nice. To avoid conflict. To please another at the expense of our Self.

Self-empowerment and self-sovereignty are available to every human being. By identifying our subconscious, sabotaging thoughts, and editing them to empowering thoughts, we actively shift our behavior and begin taking our power back.

The brain is brilliant - we couldn’t function without it. It’s also our biggest oppressor. By keeping us safe, it ‘protects’ us from uncomfortable emotions [sadness - boredom - guilt] and physical sensations [hunger - pain - exhaustion]. The brain’s ability to avoid the uncomfortable is the very trap we fall into that enables us to buffer, seemingly uncontrollably, and keep us stuck in a habit or relationship pattern for years or decades.

You can break free with a willingness to be uncomfortable and sit with it for a while.

Coco Chanel is iconic and timeless, embodying unshakeable self confidence and authenticity. While she certainly felt fear, uncertainty and doubt like the rest of us, she didn’t let any of those feelings stop her. She broke the glass ceiling before we had even defined what that is.

The emotion of fear is a resistant energy that causes us to stay stuck. Acknowledging and defining our own fears is the first step to release the fear and move toward acting with courage.
