Kids creating change!
Meet Sydney Keys III, the founder and CEO of Books and Bros Reading Club.
From a young age, Sidney Keys III loved to read. But finding characters he could relate to was a challenge, because most of the books at his school library featured white protagonists.

He and his mom Winne started his reading club in 2016 for boys ages 7 to 13. The club, which now has 250 member, focuses on African American literature and meets each month to discuss a book; past topics have included history, sci-fi and fantasy genres.

Meetups take place in the Saint Louis area, but out-of-town "bros" can participate by Skype. Caldwell, who manages the club's business and communications, said Books n Bros wants to eventually offer the program in schools.
The club is open to boys of all races and backgrounds and has an "Adopt a Bro" option enabling donors to sponsor memberships, which cost $25 a month.

Children are never too young to learn about social justice, about doing the right thing, about equality, racism, and kindness and getting involved with their community.

Explaining social justice to children can feel daunting due to all of the heavy topics involved – not to mention the fact that none of us have all of the answers – but helping children understand what’s happening in the world and where they fit in critical.

Check out this short article on talking to your child about social justice.

Our Mission is Simple. Educate and Give.

Speak Up Book Club Inc. was formed in 2020 by……….

Parents and educators who believe we all do better when we all do better.

Our mission is to encourage dialogue and bridge diversity gaps in literature through education, communication and donations. We know representation in children’s literature matters. We hope to promote active engagement and the investment of resources to unrepresented communities.

Our first goal is donate books to BIPOC children creating a in-home library that is reflective of their own family. Children need to see themselves and see themselves being celebrated. Historically BIPOC have been, and continue to be, underrepresented, misrepresented, or invisible in children's literature. We accomplish the donation goal through subscriptions to families like yours. We provide new resources, actions plans, activities and a new book each month that help parents facilitate discussions of hard topics. Racism, white privilege, and how to take action can be intimidating to tackle. We want to help.
