Polycarbonate panels going up!

Went with 16mm 5 wall 2 sided UV protected panels to provide some insulation and strength against wind and snow load. These panels passed tests simulated for 170mph window and 9lb cannon shot too, so if branches broke and hit it we should be good! They'll add slight 2.778 R value. They also filter and diffuse the sunlight too at 65% light transmission which is equivalent to having at 35% shade cloth. At almost 5k ft elevation our sunlight is pretty intense, so I'm hoping this balances things out and I might not need shade cloth in the summer. 🀞

I found a website that orders panels cut to length. For the South wall and roof this saved me time on cutting to the exact height/length and also money paying for a generic sized panel that was bigger than I needed.
These gables ends were quite the trick to figure out how it wanted to piece them together. I considered having a seem in the center/down from the peak, but I am also considering adding an automatic vent in the center of the gable so if that square gets cut into the center I wanted the surrounding material to be a solid piece for strength.

Over the process went smoothly. Having a second set of hands to handle the large panels was great. Also, to keep a straight edge/guide still while cutting instead of messing with clamps and boards to hold a guide in place, was an enormous help. Once cut to size, we measured and pre-drilled the screw holes in the poly. Having wiggle room around the screw allows the material to expand in heat and contract in cold. The screws are roof screws with metal/EPDM washers for sealing/waterproofing.
The dual sided foam glazing tape wasnt p***e necessary, but one website explained using it and I otherwise was planning on doing caulk, which has to be 100% silicone when touching Polycarbonate. So I figured this tape is uniform and quick to apply with no mess, while adding some cushion and seal between the wood framing and poly panels.

There are H channels connecting the panels together vertically with enough space to allow for expansion. Plus, U channels need to be on the top and bottom of every panel, to seal the open end of the flutes/channels.

DIY Greenhouse build! Check out my story highlight β™»οΈπŸ‘ for the details of how it got this far and to see the latest updates!

Shou Sugi Ban is a Japaness method to preserve wood, making it more rot resistant. I am loving the look of the grain and dark colors it brings to the greenhouse! 😍
