✨🌀 PLAY 🌀✨

I love to help people reconnect with their innate sense of play! ✨

When we playfully explore as we learn, rather than trying to control or force or ‘get it just right,’ we not only transmute fear and perfectionism to joy, we also integrate what we’re learning much faster.

Play opens us to greater possibilities, aligning us with the truth of an infinite universe to which the most appropriate response is childlike wonder. 🌀

Ask any of my students, they’ll tell you how playful my approach is. This doesn’t mean it’s not steeped in knowledge, wisdom, or mindfulness! 👁️ It means we give ourselves permission to be silly, so we can get out of our own way.

Tomorrow 5pm at Lajja Space is our final Vocal Yoga class of the month - the best one to drop in on! 🕉️

And next Thursday October 1st we start a new 4 week journey, designed to reconnect you with your authentic voice 🦋 Find freedom in expression through playful exploration!

And I’m always here to answer any questions. How can I support you in your vocal journey? 🫶

Equinox Yoga 🍁 Wednesday noon - 1pm Lajja Space 🪷

This Tuesday evening, the sun enters Libra as the autumn equinox starts in the northern hemisphere. But because this happens late in the day, Wednesday feels like a more appropriate day to celebrate - day and night will be relatively equal. ⚖️

Balance is a theme that runs through all of our lives.
We strive to keep an ‘even keel’ through the ups and downs of life, we strive to balance work and play, or career and family, even the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

In physical asana practice, we ground down and make several subtle adjustments in order to maintain balance in tree pose, warrior 3, ardha chandrasana, or any number of one-legged balances. By challenging ourselves to physically balance in this way, we are building strength and stability through our core and through joints such as our knees and ankles. 💪

This kind of strength building, coupled with the practice of making those many necessary subtle adjustments, can help us practice staying in the moment and cultivate a deeper internal balance that will serve us in our lives! ✨

Join me this Wednesday in practicing balance and flow 🌀 Come as you are and leave with greater peace, presence, and poise. This is a gentle class while still being invigorating and strengthening, and appropriate for all levels. I will meet you where you are while gently challenging you to find both inner strength and surrender.

How is surrender connected to balance? When we let go of our conception of what balance looks like (often based on erroneous assumptions), we allow ourselves to naturally make those small adjustments that are needed in order to stay in a balanced flow.

It feels like a letting-go, a loss of control. But that is just what is needed to find our balance - in fact we may even have to fall a few (or several!) times. But over time we learn to trust, and we end up building some pretty incredible inner strength along the way. 💫

Come ground, center and balance with me this Wednesday, and every Wednesday at noon in our beautiful downtown Milwaukie studio. 🪷 Click the link in my bio to save your spot! 🫶

✨ It’s been quite a summer! ☀️

As the Autumn equinox approaches, it feels like a good time to celebrate the highlights of the summer while releasing stress and returning to a more grounded state of being. 🌱

I’m super grateful that this summer I was able to go on two different east coast trips, see both of my parents, perform with dear friends early in the summer, share Oregon Country Fair and some fun bike rides plus a jazz festival with my love, fun times with my sister, sweet times with Alder who is now 19 🤯 a musical weekend retreat with my best friend, and to top it all off, an incredible trip to Orcas island. ✨

The highlight of my most recent east coast trip, besides spending quality time with my mom and brother, was introducing Alder to their great uncle for the first time, sharing music with him, and celebrating the life of my aunt Linda Jones - an inspiring painter, lover of animals, activist, and so much more. 💜

The last three pics are from this past week, sharing the tradition of apples and honey with Alder (For a sweet new year - Shana Tova!), 🍯 a fun grounding ritual in community, and a walk and talk with a dear friend. 🥰

Life is so rich and full, and though I’m sharing the highs, that doesn’t mean there’s not also lows. If you’re in the Portland area with me, let’s gather together at Lajja Space to support each other through all of the ups and downs of life! Community is where it’s at, friends! 🩵 Thanks for being on this journey with me!

✨ RESONANCE ✨

When we sing, we are challenged to find our true resonance within. Every voice is unique, so imitating another’s voice is seldom helpful. So, how do we find our way when we are playing an instrument with no clear buttons or valves to press? Where is the instruction manual?

In Vocal Yoga class tomorrow, I will offer tips to get you started on your journey to find your resonance, in addition to reviewing alignment and breath 🦋

The yoga of voice begins when we surrender to the process of exploring our own unique instrument, and when our own inner teacher is our primary guide. An external teacher is important, too, especially in the beginning, to shine the light when it feels like we are groping in dark rooms inside ourselves. But ultimately, one of my primary goals as a teacher is to help you build not only muscle memory that supports healthy vocalization, but also the power of curiosity and discernment within yourself as you get to know your voice. 👁️

And when the inner critic chimes in, can you thank the nagging voices for sharing, then re-focus on that teacher within? Let that teacher guide you toward your true resonance once again, in that way practicing self-assertion and letting your voice be heard! I feel so honored to guide my students in this process; to help them build their own inner teacher, and to empower them to discover and share their unique, beautiful voice. ✨

The first step is to focus on the sensations in your body - how it feels when you sing - rather than what it sounds like to your own ears. Ask yourself: where do I feel a buzzy vibration? Some possible locations could be - your chest, your throat, the front of your mouth, your palette, your cheekbones, your “third eye” (forehead), or even the crown of your head or the back of your neck. If you’re having trouble finding any buzz, try humming, then try and keep that buzz going as you open to a vowel like ‘ah.’

Drop in for class tomorrow for more tips! Thursday September 17th, 5 - 6:15pm

These lessons are keys 🗝️ to greater freedom in expression 🦋 and we’ll explore them in class this Thursday, 5pm at Lajja Space 🪷

1. Your whole body is your instrument - not just the throat! From our heels to our heads, the breath touches us and resonance rings through us, from the inside out! When we learn to stay aware of the entirety of our instrument as we sing, we can harness the innate power and unique signature of our instrument. ✨

2. Though we may have certain voices were more drawn towards, that is a subjective evaluation and the truth is that, at its core, each voice is uniquely beautiful. Your voice is the truest signature of who you are, and it’s waiting to be reclaimed, harnessed, awakened. If you can talk (with inflection), you can sing - there is no such thing as “tone deaf.” All voices can be freed with enough time and proper training.

3. We hear ourselves through our bones; others hear us through air. We can get close to knowing how we truly sound by recording ourselves with a good microphone, but compressed sounds can never truly compare to the real thing. When we trust and share our voices without worrying about how we sound, it is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others. 💝

4. Singing directly stimulates the vagus nerve, which passes through and controls the larynx, vocal cords, and muscles at the back of the throat. When we sing or even hum, we shift our bodies away from the “fight-or-flight” and into the “rest and digest” parasympathetic nervous system state, and also potentially support feelings of safety, social bonding, and emotional well-being. Singing feels so good and is so good for us! 😋

5. Our modern adult lives and patriarchy have kept us imprisoned in cycles of stress and control, productivity and force, attaching our worth to what we produce. But can we remember what it felt like to learn something new with curiosity, even joy? We all experienced this as a child - children are much more willing to try something new, and if it doesn’t work, keep trying! They will playfully explore different possibilities until they succeed, without self-judgment. A playful approach will actually help you active your goals faster!

✨COMPASSION✨

Can we have compassion for all the parts of ourselves?

Sometimes there are parts that we’ve neglected or disowned, because they didn’t fit with what our caretakers or society deemed acceptable.

But healing requires that we get to know those parts, and embrace them with compassion.

This is what we do in vocal yoga - all parts of us get to have a voice, and when we feel vulnerable, that’s the time to lean in and pay attention.

When we bring in compassion, something shifts. We develop the ability to lovingly catch ourselves when we’re playing out the old patterns that no longer serve. Our voice becomes more integrated, and oftentimes more beautiful and powerful than we ever thought possible. ✨

You’re invited to join me in this transformative practice - every Thursday at 5pm we’ll circle up in our sweet studio ( Lajja Space ) 🪷 sharing compassion for one another and most importantly, ourselves.

Put next Thursday’s class in your calendar, or sign up for the four week course in October! Follow the link in my bio to my ✨new website✨ to learn more and save your spot! 💖

Last week, my voice went quiet.

My vocal folds (cords) were swollen, and I had no choice but to completely rest my voice. No speaking or singing, not even whispering.

Instead of beating myself up like I have in the past (“how could I, as a voice teacher, over-use my voice to that point?!”), I chose to learn the deeper lessons.

I learned once again to provide for myself from within, instead of seeking happiness or peace outside of me.

I’m in a season of showing up for myself more fully, and not holding back.

So even though I empower others’ voices as my life calling, I’m still on my own journey of voicing myself more authentically. But that’s the kind of teacher we all crave, right friends? The kind that’s a life-long learner, and will meet you right where you’re at. 🩵

If you’ve been following along, you already know I teach vocal yoga - a practice of freeing one’s authentic voice. 🦋

September is a new beginning - new website, new offerings, new rhythm - join me in exploring new possibilities!

Message me to save your spot in the next three vocal yoga classes this month (only $99 for all 3 classes!) or reserve your spot for October. 💜 See you in the studio! ✨

Our first class was so beautiful.

We shared the outdated stories about our voices, and planted seeds for new possibilities.

We explored ✨ALIGNMENT✨ - both physical and energetic, spiritual.

There’s still time to join! Next week our theme is Breath.

We meet every Thursday, 5pm at Lajja Space 🪷 We’ll cover all three pillars of healthy vocal technique in each class, so drop-ins are possible.

You’re invited to join for the next three classes of the month for only $99. (3 spots available).

Message me if you feel the call to unlock your authentic voice! I’ll save your spot and provide you with all the tools to speak and sing with greater ease and joy. 🌀

I know what it’s like to struggle with your voice.

I know what it’s like to have your voice taken from you.

Growing up with asthma, and years of being told I was in the wrong vocal category, I had to rebuild my voice from the ground up using yogic and somatic techniques. That process gave me something that conventional voice training never could, giving me an embodied understanding of what it takes to free one’s own voice.

I am a lifelong singer, a voice teacher of over 20 years, and a yoga teacher of over a decade. My years of experience teaching plus my training in a holistic voice teacher training program has given me a deep understanding of how the voice works and how students learn best.

I will meet you where you are. I will not tell you what your voice should sound like, and help you find what was always truly yours. I will meet any challenges with acceptance and support you in your intentions.

I have a passion for empowering people with the tools to free their unique, authentic voice and the confidence to share it with greater ease and joy. 🦋

I have intuitive and empathic gifts that assist me in “tuning in” to my students, and my playful approach puts people at ease. If you’re needing an affirming, encouraging approach in order to work past vocal blocks, including vocal trauma or a transition, I would be honored to support you. 🦋

We start this Thursday - a four week course that covers all the basics of healthy vocalization, and repeats monthly. Greatest benefit comes from attending all four classes, but drop-ins are possible. You may also make up a missed class the following month. 🦋

Thursdays 5 - 6:15pm at Lajja Space 🪷

Sign up for the whole month for $133. Drop-in rates: value $44, access rate $35, and supporter level $50. Message me to save your spot 🦋

🌀 Enlivening Hatha Yoga 🌀 Noon on Wednesdays Lajja Space 🪷

I had an indescribably healing time on Orcas Island with my love Jason Brown 🥰 (who is a talented photographer and took all these photos) ✨

Then we returned earlier this week and the hustle of the default world sent me into a healing crisis.

I’m struggling to find the peace I found on the island. I know it’s within me, but life is asking me to create better boundaries so there’s space to let it arise.

My intention with my new Hatha class is to help all of us balance not only our bodies but also will and surrender, dreams and details, peace and practicality.

Those themes have been showing up for me big time during this eclipse season, and I’m inspired to hold space for folks to ground, feel empowered, and integrate their summer lessons.

Join me for an all levels class that will help us process and release so we can find balance and peace.

Just one hour, this class is a powerful reset right in the middle of your week - designed to help us come back home to ourselves. 💜 Message to reserve your spot.

Happy late summer, dear ones! See you in the studio!
