This week all ages are learning about nutrition and we started with fruit.

Yesterday they learned about watermelons, how they grow, what nutritional value they hold, listened to songs about watermelons, and then they ate freshly sliced watermelon.

Today they learned about the nutritional benefits of 🍍

LECTURE: NITROGEN GAS (N₂)

1. What is Nitrogen Gas?
Nitrogen is the most common gas in our air.
*Chemical Formula*: $N_2$
*Air contains*: About 78% Nitrogen

*Properties:*
- *Color*: Colorless
- *Odor*: Odorless
- *Taste*: Tasteless
- *Important property*: It does *not support burning or respiration*

*2. How to Prepare Nitrogen Gas in the Laboratory?*
*Chemical Reaction:*
NH_4Cl (s) + NaNO_2 (s) \rightarrow N_2 (g) + NaCl (s) + 2H_2O (l)
We heat a mixture of *Ammonium Chloride* and *Sodium Nitrite* in a conical flask.

*Materials Required:*
Ammonium chloride, Sodium nitrite, Conical flask, Delivery tube, Gas jar, Water trough, Heat source, Cork

*Method:*
1. Take a mixture of $NH_4Cl$ and $NaNO_2$ in a conical flask
2. Fit the flask with a delivery tube
3. Heat the mixture gently
4. Collect the gas in a gas jar by water displacement
5. The gas collected is Nitrogen

_See the diagram_: The gas bubbles go through water and collect in an inverted gas jar.

*3. Uses of Nitrogen Gas*
1. *Fertilizers*: Used to make fertilizers for plants to grow better
2. *Electric Bulbs*: Used inside bulbs to prevent the filament from oxidizing
3. *Food Packaging*: Used in chips and snack packets to keep food fresh
4. *Chemical Industries*: Used as an inert gas during reactions
5. *Welding & Metals*: Used in welding and in production of metals

*4. Quick Summary for Students*
*"N for Nitrogen = No color, No smell, No burning"*
But it’s very useful! It helps plants grow, keeps food fresh, and protects things.
