Yesterday, our school-age students celebrated Juneteenth by decorating red velvet cupcakes with African-inspired colored frosting and sprinkles, while others enjoyed making their own delicious banana pudding.

These desserts hold a special place in African American culture. Red foods and beverages are often associated with Juneteenth celebrations, symbolizing resilience, strength, sacrifice, and the rich traditions passed down through generations. Banana pudding is a beloved dessert that has long been a staple at family gatherings, celebrations, and community events throughout the Black community.

As educators, it is important that we teach children not only about the significance of Juneteenth—the day that marked the end of slavery in the United States—but also about the culture, traditions, and stories that continue to shape our communities today.
