Art of Writing

Good advice. Over 10,000 students from hundreds of schools have gathered in the galleries to allow the great works of art speak to them.

For over 30 years, the Art of Writing: Young Authors and Artists Conference has inspired 15,000+ students at the Milwaukee Art Museum, bringing together grades 3–12 to share their passion for creative expression through writing and art. “Listen to the picture” was one child’s advice for upcoming authors and artists participating in our Art of Writing conference held annually at the Milwaukee Art M

useum. Those encounters inspire stories and drawings that fill our annual publication entitled, Art of Writing. I’m a 33-year veteran Wisconsin public school teacher, and for the last 25 years, my wife and I have created on our kitchen table 25 young authors and artists’ conferences. Our mission has been to bring together gifted young writers and artists in a world-class museum to collaborate and create their own works of art for publication. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we’re proud to say it’s been a success. The students leave their schools for the day to work with strangers who become new friends. Dozens of teachers leave their classrooms to assist them in finding their personal connection to the art in the museum’s collection. From the morning assembly filled with music, to the concluding final draft, together we have a magical day. Many of these students have written to us citing the conference as, “the best day of my life” and “a day I’ll never forget”. Then we invite the whole group back six months later for a publishing party! This unique event is exclusive to the Milwaukee Art Museum, but that shouldn’t be the case. Museums all over the world yearn for more young people to visit their galleries. Fieldtrips and classes bring in kids, but as the economy has dwindled, so have student trips to museums. On the other hand, our conference has grown steadily over the years thanks to the very positive feedback and support of participating schools and the Milwaukee Art Museum staff. We have heard from many former participants well into adulthood who cherish the memory of the picture perfect setting where they were inspired to create their first published work. For the past 25 years we published over 10, 000 young artists and writers, an experience of a lifetime.

May is National Photography Month, and at the Art of Writing Conference, we celebrate the many ways young people tell stories—through writing, visual art, and photography. Each year, the Art of Writing Conference brings together young authors, artists, and photographers to share their voices, creativity, and unique perspectives.

To celebrate their work, all students who attended the Art of Writing Conference—and their families—are cordially invited to the Art of Writing, Young Authors and Artists Conference Celebration at the Milwaukee Art Museum on Sunday, May 17.

So this past Monday was a beautiful example of evolution for education when I recently contributed to the Art of Writing: Young Authors and Artists Conference at the Milwaukee Art Museum ! Thank you Terry Kaldhusdal for the invitation - it was a Monday well spent!

Sharing my transferable skills learned from both Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and School of the Museum of Fine Arts art programs was such a privilege . I learned so much about others and myself through this process.

It is not everyday you get to teach the ins and outs of the art making process , critique, and revisitation of art to youth… as well as art writing [which brought even more music to my ears!]

I was thrilled to know that Wisconsin has an effort like this to join artists across the state at a young age. Keep it up! & to the students - oh keep shining !!
