Due to inclement weather, all Carmen Schools and buildings will be closed on Friday, January 23, and all after-school activities are canceled.

✅Friday will be an asynchronous learning day for students.
✅ Classes are still in session tomorrow, Thursday, January 22.

Qué Pasó: El 13 de noviembre, el comité SASI (Student Achievement and School Innovation Committee) de la Junta Escolar de Milwaukee se negó a recomendar la renovación del contrato de Carmen Northwest, aun cuando el propio equipo de revisión de MPS recomendó una renovación completa por tres años.

En lugar de seguir el nuevo proceso de revisión del distrito, creado para dar más transparencia y asegurar objetividad, varios miembros de la junta atacaron la existencia misma de las escuelas chárter y dijeron que votarían en contra sin importar el desempeño. Las familias se quedaron sin información clara sobre qué pasará con sus hijos si la escuela pierde su contrato.

La Junta completa votará el 20 de noviembre.

Por Qué Esto Está Mal: Durante más de una década, Carmen Northwest ha sido una opción escolar estable y de alta calidad para las familias del noroeste de Milwaukee. La escuela apoya el crecimiento académico de los estudiantes, ofrece un ambiente seguro, y tiene una tasa de graduación que supera a muchas escuelas de MPS.

Rechazar la renovación de Carmen Northwest también tendría un impacto económico serio. En un momento en que MPS enfrenta un déficit estructural de más de $100 millones, terminar el contrato significaría perder millones de dólares en ingresos, además de los pagos de arrendamiento que ayudan a cubrir el costo del edificio.

🚨 Urgent Action Needed for Carmen Schools

Today, we must show up and stand together as ONE CARMEN at the MPS Central Office. This week, we’ve shared our frustrations, uncertainty, and sadness following last week’s MPS Board meeting. We’ve also affirmed our confidence in our legacy, our momentum, and our hope to continue educating and serving ALL Carmen students and families.

This vote may center on the Northwest campus charter renewal, but its impact will be felt across our entire community.
