Tuesday, February 10, 2026 — Little New Year (小年)

Little New Year (Xiaonian) marks the beginning of the final preparations for Chinese New Year. It is a traditional day to say goodbye to the Kitchen God, clean the home, and welcome good fortune for the coming year.

What Little New Year Represents

Farewell to the Kitchen God – wishing for blessings and good reports

House cleaning – clearing away bad luck and making room for the new year

Sweet treats (sugar melon) – symbolizing sweetness and harmony

Start of New Year preparations – decorations, food, and celebrations begin

It’s a warm, meaningful moment before the excitement of Lunar New Year truly begins.

Major Cold is the last solar term in the Chinese calendar, usually around January 20. It marks the coldest time of the year, reminding us that after the coldest days, spring is on its way.

Cricket Chinese Academy teacher attended the 15th National Convention and Chinese Education Conference in Boston (December 2025), advancing our commitment to teacher growth and innovation in Chinese language education.

The event brought together over 300 representatives from member schools across the United States, including Chinese education experts, frontline teachers, school principals, and Chinese-American youth. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, and hands-on workshops, participants explored how emerging technologies can empower Chinese schools and strengthen their long-term mission and impact.

Slight Cold marks the beginning of the coldest period of the year. Temperatures drop, winter deepens, and it’s a time to slow down, stay warm, and embrace the rhythm of nature. 🌬️🧣

The 24 Solar Terms are an ancient Chinese calendar system based on the sun’s movement. They guide farming, seasonal activities, and daily life, reflecting the close connection between humans and nature.
