MSOE Honors Program

Here is another spotlight on one of our projects that we're very proud of! This is what Simon Restrepo, Mac Williams, and Christian Zastrow have to say:

"This year, we took part in two distinctive Honors Projects. Our first project was an Art Exhibit for MIAD's Growing Resistance Exhibition, which included creating an accompanying website. Following that, we constructed picnic tables for Antoine's Garden, utilizing our engineering skills to contribute positively to the Milwaukee community. These projects not only brought us closer together but also allowed us to apply our diverse majors (ME, CE, and EE), to community service."

As we wrap up this semester, we'd like to shine a spotlight on a few of our projects! Here's what Louis Link has to say about his project with fellow Honors student, Vincent Martin:

"Over the past year working on the MSOE Honors Program House of History (HoH) team, our goal has been helping HoH gain publicity for their deeply important work of preserving the history of Milwaukee’s q***r elders of color. The way we chose to accomplish this was publishing a zine compiling their work into a visually appealing and digestible format. A zine is essentially a small magazine about a specific topic, usually focused on art and visuals. We plan to have each edition highlight a different individual interviewed by HoH, a unique historical location, and be designed by a different local artist who will also get a short spotlight."

The planned release date for the zine will be for Pride Fest, so keep an eye out!

Freshman Honors Program students collaborated with Menominee Tribal Enterprises to develop a sustainable forestry game for all ages to learn from!

They released their first version for Arbor Day and participated in a Peace Tree ceremony.

Take a look at what some of our Honors students made to help raise funds for their project!

We are currently working on a restoration project in Texiguat, Honduras. Texiguat is a little town with a population of about 9,000 and is a couple hour car ride a on dirt roads from the nearest major city. The goal of our project is to restore a historic building and turn it into a museum, historical society, and education space. It was once home to the offices and troops of Fransico Morazán, an important military and political leader for newly independent Central America. The building is divided into three rooms. Two of the rooms will hold an exhibition about regional history, local history, and culture. The third room will house a computer lab with access to the internet. It will be used for educational purposes and allow for student to connect with a globalized world. With this project we will be creating an important community space where people of all ages and backgrounds can interact. Also, it will become a space where culture and history can be passed down to future generations. The current roadblock we face is funding, and we are asking for donations. Initially, your donations will be going towards a trip for my team to go to Honduras and visit Texiguat. We are doing this to gain an understanding for the project site, and to interact with the town and people this project will impact. The rest of the funding will then be going towards hiring engineers to inspect and ensure the longevity of this historic building and to establish the museum itself. Growing Resistance: Untold Stories of Milwaukee’s Community Guardians showcases everyday voices of resistance and resilience around environmental injustice from some of Milwaukee’s most historically underrepresented neighborhoods.

The results are in for the winning team with the most Honors Reward Program points this fall!

Congrats to Team Battle Bees! You'll get to spend an evening this week hanging with Marley-Bear (our furry special guest), creating history with our first mini-mural of our Community Celebration series, dinner, and sweet treats.
