Bembé Drum and Dance is an Afro-Latino percussion and performing arts program for school-age youth in the City of Milwaukee. The purpose of Bembé is to use applied ethnomusicology techniques to inspire musical and performance skills, build youth leadership, intergenerational connections and cultural identity exploration through Afro-Latino musical culture. Bembé has four components: The Performanc

e Ensemble (Grades 4-8), Musical Culture Exploration (Grades K-3), Intergenerational Music Therapy with senior citizens in the youth's immediate community, and the Conjunto de Oro - a group of seniors and youth who practice and perform together. In 2018, Bembé will begin to provide professional development for performance art educators to learn Afro-Latino music and dance technique from well-known masters from around the world so that they can pass those skills on to their students.
