A nonprofit publisher dedicated to strengthening public education through social justice teaching and education activism.

Rethinking Schools is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education through social justice teaching and education activism. Our magazine, books, and other resources promote equity and racial justice in the classroom. We encourage grassroots efforts in our schools and communities to enhance the learning and well being of our children, and to build broad democratic movements for social and environmental justice.

Since our founding, we have promoted a vision of education that equips students to imagine — and to help create — the transition to a more just society. We help teachers and activists tell stories about their exemplary work and about strategies of resistance. At a time of ferocious attacks on public education, your support is vital.

Throughout all of 2026, we’ll be sharing ways to help Rethinking Schools continue to uplift the education justice movement. Use these actions to help us celebrate 40 years of Rethinking Schools!

Educators play a critical and urgent role in reducing the harm that LGBTQIA+ youth face in our schools and communities. We can offer fierce affirmation and love. As we celebrate Pride Month during a time when more than 500 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have been introduced or are advancing across state governments, we encourage you to consider what teachers, schools, and districts can do to meet the needs of q***r students and families. Let’s make them visible, keep them alive, and celebrate them.

Use these resources to integrate feminist and LGBTQIA+ content to create classrooms and schools that nurture all children and their families.
