Did you see our mural at the Holiday Folk Fair? Our mural, called "Lanterns of Hope" celebrates the Traditional Arts of Thailand, designed by Keydalis Lugo Vega (Visual Arts Major 2028) and students from all visual arts classes contributed.

Milwaukee High School of the Arts students are proud of their rich and diverse cultural backgrounds. Students overwhelmingly voted to celebrate the traditional arts of Thailand because we have students in class with Thai heritage.

Dating all the way back to the 13th century, the Yi Peng Lantern Festival celebrates the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of the cool season and is viewed as a way to release negative energy and wish for good luck and fortune in the coming year. Ancient Thai cities on the banks of the Chao Phraya and Mekong rivers were trading hubs and river watersheds have yielded artifacts of traditional artmaking like pottery and sculpture with colorful and intricate motifs. Architecture, music, dance, theatre, sculpture, painting, textiles, decorative arts, and metalwork often depict religious themes developed from prehistory with the influences of Indian and Chinese cultures and their religions, Hinduism and Buddhism.

A champion for social justice: Milwaukee mourns the loss of Alderman Jonathan Brostoff at age 41 | Milwaukee Independent 11/06/2024

We are devastated to learn of the passing of Jonathan Brostoff, class of 2002.

Alderman Brostoff believed in a better Milwaukee and worked endlessly to make our city the best it could be. He loved people and was generous with his time, his friendship and his community. The outpouring of love for Jonathan on social media by the MHSA family in the past few days show how much he meant to the people who knew him. We will miss him.
