Last month, Milwaukee experienced its worst air quality ever recorded due to wildfire smoke from Canada and the northern US.

MKE FreshAir Collective sprung into action - we donated masks, posted information, and hosted three DIY Air Cleaner workshops within one week. There's four more scheduled for August.

We're grateful for our funders and community partners who assisted with this response. We are planning for future hazardous air quality days & fighting at the systems level to create safer places for Milwaukeans to breathe.

We need your support - follow us on social media; share the DIY air cleaners with friends and neighbors; stay informed through our newsletter; or donate through our website.

How did your neighborhood of Milwaukee fare when the wildfire smoke hit two weeks ago? Check out this comparative breakdown of four quadrants across Milwaukee. Wildfire smoke events like these create over 90% of Milwaukee's ANNUAL pollution exposure for PM2.5.

Some neighborhoods experience worse air quality during wildfire smoke events due to proximity to other pollution (factories or highways), elevation, geography, & closeness to Lake Michigan.

Even though our Southwest Sensor (Bluemound Heights neighborhood) experienced the worst average AQI over the week at 170, the Northeast Sensor (Harambee neighborhood) experienced the highest peak AQI reading at 708.

On the last slide, you can see the variation in AQI across the city while the wildfire smoke settled. This is why we stress the importance of checking your real-time, neighborhood air quality information! Download the IQ AirVisual App to follow your closest sensor today.

Air quality *feels* better compared to when it was hazardous, but it is still UNHEALTHY this morning. All health guidance recommends avoiding outside time, wearing a mask, & cleaning the air inside your home.

Air quality is expected to improve this afternoon. Wildfires are inherently unpredictable, and smoke travels along weather patterns. Both of these factors make long-range predictions impossible.

12pm Update: Air quality still hazardous, but may drop in unhealthy range this evening.

Wear a mask, stay inside, run an air cleaner, stay safe y'all.

Current forecast from WI DNR:
As of 7 a.m. Thursday morning, widespread Very Unhealthy (Purple) to Hazardous (Maroon) AQI PM2.5 is being observed nearly statewide. Surface analysis at 4 a.m. placed the boundary from approximately Prairie du Chien to Platteville, with cleaner air to the south and west of this boundary in portions of Grant, Lafayette, and Crawford Counties. Although this boundary may meander to the northeast from roughly 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and bring cleaner air further into far southwest Wisconsin, the boundary is then likely to sag back southwest overnight into Friday morning. We then expect to see clearing of the smoke from west to east throughout the day on Friday as southerly winds pick up ahead of an approaching system. Given this setup, we are going to extend the statewide air quality advisory until noon Friday. At that time, it will be possible that we will extend the advisory once again for eastern areas, especially those impacted by Lake Michigan. It is also possible that areas along Lake Superior will see prolonged smoke impacts and need to remain in the advisory. However, we expect to remove much of the state from the advisory area at that time for this first round of smoke.
