Water and Environmental Racism - Zinn Education Project 04/20/2023

Water and Environmental Racism
Teaching Activity. By Matt Reed and Ursula Wolfe-Rocca. Rethinking Schools.

"The Flint Water Crisis is one of the most egregious examples of environmental racism in recent memory. In 2011, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder appointed an “emergency manager,” an unelected official, to oversee the majority-Black city’s budget and cut costs. To save money, the manager ended the city’s five-decade practice of piping treated water for its residents from Detroit, and opted to pump highly corrosive, untreated water from the Flint River. While residents immediately complained of skin rashes, hair loss, and foul smelling and tasting water, it took more than a year before the contaminated water was addressed by the government, and many more years of litigation and grassroots organizing to win a settlement for victims. At least a dozen people died of Legionnaires’ disease and many more were sickened with lead and other toxins."

A mixer activity, inspired by the 2016 Democracy Now! documentary Thirsty for Democracy, introduces students to the struggle of residents to access safe water for drinking, cooking, and bathing in the majority-Black cities of Flint, Michigan; Jackson, Mississippi; and Newark, New Jersey.

THE REBELLIOUS LIFE OF MRS. ROSA PARKS

MTEA is pleased to welcome Dr. Jeanne Theoharis, author of The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks.
This is a two-part session.
The first session, on Wednesday, March 29, from 5:00-6:45pm, MTEA will virtually screen the documentary The Rebellious Life of Rosa Parks.
The second session, on Thursday, April 13, from 5:00-6:15pm. Members will have the opportunity to log into a virtual participant in a talk with author Jeanne Theoharris.
Register to learn more about the life of Rosa Parks, participate in a virtual discussion, and receive a lesson plan you can use with students this fall.
“Presenting a corrective to the popular notion of Rosa Parks as the quiet seamstress performed a single act that sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott that birthed the modern Civil Rights Movement, Jeanne Theoharis provides a revealing window into Parks’ politics and decades of activism. She shows readers how the movement radically sought — for more than half a century — to expose and eradicate the racial-caste system in jobs, schools, public services, and criminal justice and how Rosa Parks was a key player throughout.”

Wednesday, March 29, from 5:00-6:45, The Rebellious Life of Rosa Parks virtual screening.

Thursday, April 13, from 5:00-6:15, a virtual talk with author Jeanne Theoharris.
