 Learning a musical instrument is one of the most cognitively demanding activities a child can engage in, and the research on what it does to the developing brain has become remarkably consistent.
 Multiple systematic reviews and longitudinal studies show that music training produces measurable changes in brain structure, with the strongest effects on working memory, sustained attention and inhibitory control. 

These are the foundations of learning and self-regulation across childhood.
 What’s notable is how durable the effects appear to be. Adults who trained as children show stronger auditory processing decades later, even after years without playing.
