This week at White Lotus, we worked on armbars
One of the biggest themes was attachment. If you hit the ground and suddenly your armbar isn’t there anymore, there’s a good chance you loosened an attachment somewhere along the way.
We worked through:
🔹 Active hamstring engagement
If you can’t plant your foot on the ground, draw your hamstring back. Keep actively pulling back rather than letting your leg go passive.
🔹 Different ways to attach with your arms
There’s more than one way to control and connect to the arm. We played with a variety of grips and attachments to keep the arm close and make the position harder to escape.
🔹 When they defend with the gable grip
If they defend with a gable grip, don’t just try to muscle the armbar through. Collect the elbow. If you have the gi, you can also use it to help pull the arm closer and strengthen your control.
The goal isn’t just to “do an armbar.” It’s to understand how your attachments keep the arm connected all the way through the finish.
Painless. Precise. Playful.
