The School Building Committee is meeting tonight at 7pm to review the options and cost for the construction of a PreK/K program at Laboure College.

The SBC has been working with DLR Group (Architects) over the past few months during the summer to help develop a conceptual program and cost to help inform the Town as it pursues purchasing the Laboure College facility.

The Milton School Committee and the Superintendent has asked the School Building Committee (SBC) to evaluate the Laboure College property on Adams street to determine whether its upcoming sale presents an opportunity to address the school district’s long-term overcrowding challenges. A feasibility assessment by a professional architect is planned to evaluate the site, determine whether the structure could be effectively adapted for use as a school, and assess the total cost impact as compared to the original plan to build a new middle school on Gile road site.

☀️Tuesday is Election Day. We have compiled a list of Town Meeting candidates by precinct that will champion excellence in the Milton Public Schools and are committed to addressing our overcrowding challenge.

We are also endorsing Pete Obershiemer and Megan Nolan for Select Board (you can vote for both) and Sharese Caldwell for School Committee.

Please make sure to vote tomorrow (Tuesday, April 28.). Polls open 7AM - 8PM. 🗳️

Here are a few facts about the overall school building project and the process.

We are writing to share an update on the Town of Milton’s progress with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) as we work toward building a much-needed new school.

Last year, the MSBA invited Milton into the statewide school building construction grant program after independently validating the overcrowding of Milton’s Public Schools.

Over the coming months, Milton must engage with the MBSA through a series of modules. This process takes time and will ultimately determine the level of state matching funds that will go toward reducing the school building construction cost.

Where We Are Today

• On May 1st, the Town officially began the MSBA grant process, which is made up of several modules. Each module requires specific deliverables that must be completed in the order set by the MSBA

• For Module 1, Milton submitted all required deliverables in under 90 days—well ahead of the 270-day window

• We are now waiting for MSBA to set official student enrollment (scheduled for Oct. 20 2025)

• MSBA Board approval is expected by Dec. 2025 (but possibly as late as Feb. 2026), after which we can start Module 2: selecting the design team.

Reverter Clause: Fall Town Meeting Article
Because of the timeline set by the MSBA module process, Milton’s School Building Committee (SBC) submitted an Article for Fall Town Meeting to extend the reverter clause on the land swap that was approved in 2023. This extension is necessary to keep the project on track.

Select Board Election - There is a Special Election on November 4 for the vacant Select Board seat. The Select Board plays an important role in the future of Milton’s school building project. Please make a plan to vote.

In Case You Missed It: Majority of Milton’s Select Board Rejected New School

On August 6th, Select Board Chair Richard Wells, Vice-Chair Roxanne Musto, and Secretary John Keohane voted 3:2 to deny Milton residents the ability to vote this fall on a new school building to address the decade-long school overcrowding crisis.

Wells, Musto, and Keohane voted NO even after:

• The Site was Approved: The Massachusetts Legislature passed, and Governor Healey signed, the Land Swap that secures the land on Gile Road for the new school (MA Chapter 147 of Acts of 2024).

• All Other Relevant Town Committees Voiced Support: Milton’s School Committee and Milton’s School Building Committee both voted in support of placing the question before voters in November. Both committees expressed to the Select Board their support of the project and their desire to let residents vote as soon as possible (November).

• Design and Cost were Presented: The Milton School Building Committee presented a comprehensive design and a detailed cost estimate of $173 million to the Select Board.

Further, Wells, Musto, and Keohane voted NO even after a proposal was made to remove the preschool from the project to lower its cost to $155 million.

As the new school year begins with one of the largest incoming kindergarten classes, Milton’s teachers and students will continue to suffer the consequences of school overcrowding due to the lack of leadership at the Select Board.

The solution to Milton’s school overcrowding crisis is now on hold unless new pro-education leaders are elected in upcoming elections.
