What an amazing weekend for SPM! Our students brought home top honors across every age group at last weekend’s annual Youth Writing Competition, hosted by the Milpitas Library and Education Advisory Commission.

Participants in grades 4 - 12 faced a intense test of quick thinking and writing: each division opened their own prompts circling prompts focused on how libraries create and support community, then crafted a winning essay within 60 minutes.

Look at what our incredible students accomplished:
🦁High School (9th–12th Grade): 10th grader Ishan B. won 1st Place ($300 cash prize). SPM alumna Hisha S. took 2nd Place!
🦁Middle School (7th–8th Grade): 8th grader Aahana M. secured 4th Place!
🦁Elementary/Middle (4th–6th Grade): 6th grader Saisha M. took home 2nd Place!

The main award ceremony will take place at Milpitas City Hall Tuesday October 20 between 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

A massive thank you to our entire team and supportive community. We extend a special shoutout to SPM's ELA and history teachers, whose guidance means the world to our students.

🔬 Hands-On Science in 6th Grade with Ms. Revankar! 🧬

Our 6th graders are diving deep into the microscopic world of biology! After studying the key structures and functions of cell organelles—from the nucleus to the mitochondria—students put their knowledge into action by crafting detailed visual models of animal and plant cells.

Using creative materials like clay, craft supplies, markers, and hot glue, students collaborated in groups to build 3D models that bring cellular structures to life. Hands-on activities like this help make complex abstract concepts tangible, memorable, and fun.

Great job to our young scientists for showing off such fantastic creativity, teamwork, and scientific understanding! 🌟👏

🎓 What an incredible turnout at our College Fair! 🎓

Last Tuesday, September 29th, students from Stratford Prep and BASIS Independent gathered for an exciting, future-focused evening! With 30+ top universities and colleges represented and over 300 attendees packing the hall, the energy was unmatched.

Our high schoolers spent the evening exploring higher education pathways, chatting directly with admissions representatives, and taking big strides toward their academic futures. 🌟

A massive THANK YOU to our wonderful college counselor Dr. Dina Cunha for her amazing work organizing and executing this stellar event and for bringing our community together to make it all possible! 🙌

📐 Proof you can hold in your hands! 🧩

Ms. Yang’s 6th-grade math class took on the Pythagorean theorem—not with worksheets, but with geometric dissection! By slicing and rearranging sections from the squares along a right triangle’s legs, students assembled a complete square on the hypotenuse, turning $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$ into a real-life tangram puzzle.

There’s nothing quite like turning abstract theory into hands-on discovery—especially hearing those proud shouts of "I get it!" echo across the room. 💡✨

Young scientists in Mr. Dinh’s middle school science class took over the kitchen for a hands-on adventure with physical and chemical changes! 🧪✨ Students mixed, heated, and observed everyday materials across six interactive stations to spot real-world reactions like fizzing gases, color shifts, and dissolving. From baking soda bubbles to mystery solutions, hands-on learning has never been this exciting! 🔬🥼

🔬 Dr. Windgassen’s Biology students recently dived into the concept of osmosis using everyday potatoes! 🥔 By testing raw potato tissue under different salt conditions, they observed firsthand how solute concentrations drive water movement across selectively permeable plant cell membranes. 💧 It’s hands-on science in action as our young researchers explore cellular transport! 🧬
