🌞🌑 A big day and night for skywatching!

Today, August 12, the Moon will pass between Earth and the Sun, creating a solar eclipse! While parts of Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal will experience a total eclipse, here in the valley we’ll see a partial eclipse -- a small “bite” appearing along the Sun’s edge.

For our area, the eclipse is expected to:

🌒 Begin around 1:09 PM
🌑 Reach its maximum around 1:51 PM
🌘 End around 2:32 PM

Remember: Never look directly at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses. Regular sunglasses are not safe. Families can also make a simple pinhole viewer to watch the Sun’s image indirectly. National Geographic Kid's offers instructions for creating one here. Adult help is required!

✨ And the sky show continues tonight! The Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. The Perseids occur when Earth travels through debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As those tiny ice particles enter our atmosphere at high speed, they heat up and create the bright streaks we call “shooting stars.”

This year’s peak arrives during a new moon, giving us beautifully dark skies for viewing. Find the darkest place you can, get comfortable, and give your eyes about 20–30 minutes to adjust. Meteors may be visible throughout the night, but viewing should improve after midnight, with some of the best chances in the hours before dawn.

From a daytime dance between the Sun and Moon to a nighttime sky filled with meteors, today is a wonderful reminder that science is happening all around and above us! 🔭💫

Here's how to make a pinhole camera for safe solar eclipse viewing.

🎉🌿 Today, Greenwood Friends School celebrates its 48th Founders Day!

For 48 years, Greenwood has been more than a school; it has been a place where children are truly known, curiosity is nurtured, and learning is grounded in the Quaker values of kindness, peace, and respect for every person and living creature.

Today, we honor the visionaries who planted Greenwood’s earliest seeds; the teachers, families, trustees, alumni, and friends who helped it grow, and the generations of students who have filled our classrooms and campus with wonder, creativity, laughter, and light.

As we celebrate all that has come before us, we look toward the future with deep gratitude and hope. Greenwood’s story continues in every child who discovers their voice, every teacher who sparks a lifelong love of learning, and every person who believes in the power of a small school to make a profound difference.

Here’s to 48 years of learning, belonging, and growing together, and to many more years of being rooted in peace and growing the future. 💚

Happy Founders Day, Greenwood! 🌱
