🧠💕 NANA J’S DID YOU KNOW?

👄 Why do little ones put EVERYTHING in their mouths?!

If you’ve ever wondered why your little one seems determined to taste-test the entire world… 😂 there’s actually a reason!

For babies and young toddlers, mouthing is part of how they explore and learn. Their mouths give them information about an object’s texture, shape, temperature and firmness.

It can also happen because:

🦷 They’re teething and chewing feels good.
🧠 They’re exploring something new.
✋ Their hand-to-mouth coordination is developing.
👶 They’re learning about their environment using ALL of their senses.

So when you see a little one pick up a toy, examine it carefully…and then immediately stick it in their mouth like it needed a taste test… 😂

They’re not just being silly — that little brain is BUSY learning! 🧠✨

Of course, this is also why we stay extra diligent about cleaning toys, watching for choking hazards and redirecting things that don’t belong in little mouths. ❤️

✨ Now you know!

🧠💕 INTRODUCING… NANA J’S “DID YOU KNOW?”

One thing I’ve learned after spending so many years caring for and teaching little ones is that there is ALWAYS something new to learn about children! And sometimes, something that seems one way on the surface has a completely different explanation once we understand the why behind it.

That’s why I’m starting a new weekly series called “Nana J’s Did You Know?” 💕

Each week I’ll share a little fact about child development, behaviors, health, learning, daycare life, or just those funny little things our children do that sometimes leave us scratching our heads. 😂

I want to make something very clear from the beginning:

These posts are never intended to call out, criticize, embarrass or insult ANY parent. ❤️

Sometimes conversations happen at daycare that make me realize, “You know what? Other parents may not know this either!” And instead of assuming everyone knows something, I would rather share information and help explain another side of it.

Parents know their children better than anyone. At the same time, childcare providers get the unique opportunity to care for many children, at many developmental stages, for many hours every week. We can learn from each other. 💕

Sometimes a little bit of information or clarification can completely change the way we look at a behavior, an illness, a developmental stage—or even something our child does that we thought was unusual.

There is absolutely no judgment here. Just learning, sharing, growing and doing our best for these amazing little humans we all love. 🥰

So once a week…

🧠 We’re going to learn something new.
🤔 We might bust a misconception or two.
😂 We’ll probably laugh at some of the crazy things littles do.
❤️ And hopefully we’ll understand our children just a little bit better.

Because when we know better, we can understand better. 🧠❤️

🎃 FUN FACT OF THE DAY! 🎃

Hello, October! 🍂 Did you know pumpkins are fruits—not vegetables? 😲🎃

Because pumpkins grow from a flower and contain seeds, botanically they’re considered a fruit! And here’s something fun to try with the kiddos this fall: before cutting open a pumpkin, let them guess whether it will sink or float in water. Most whole pumpkins actually float because they’re less dense than water! 🎃💦

Little experiments like this are an easy way for children to practice predicting, observing, and discovering—which are some of the very first building blocks of science. 🧠🔬💕

💬 Parent Question: Ask your little rascal: “Do you think a pumpkin will SINK or FLOAT?” 🎃⬆️⬇️ Then test it together and see who guessed correctly! 😂❤️

🕷️ FUN FACT OF THE DAY! 🕷️🍂

Did you know spider webs can be easier to spot on cool fall mornings because tiny drops of dew collect on the silk? 💧🕸️

Those sparkly webs are a great little nature scavenger hunt for kiddos! On your next morning walk, see who can spot a web first—just remember, we LOOK with our eyes and let our eight-legged neighbor keep his house. 😂🕷️🏠

Simple outdoor exploring helps little ones practice observation, curiosity, and noticing tiny details in the world around them. 🌎🧠💕

💬 Parent Question: What does your little rascal do when they see a spider—“WOW!” 😍 or “NOPE, NOPE, NOPE!” 🏃😂❤️

🦔 FUN FACT OF THE DAY! 🦔

Did you know baby hedgehogs are called hoglets? 🥹🦔💕 Even cuter—their tiny spines are soft and hidden under their skin when they’re born, then begin appearing shortly afterward!

As they grow, those little hoglets explore and learn about the world around them using their strong senses of smell and hearing. 👃👂🌿

Kind of like our little rascals—tiny, curious, and always investigating EVERYTHING! 😂💕 Sometimes with their hands… sometimes with their noses… and occasionally with things we really wish they wouldn’t touch. 🤣

💬 Parent Question: What’s the funniest thing your little rascal has gotten curious about lately? ❤️

🐧 FUN FACT OF THE DAY! 🐧

Did you know penguin parents recognize their own babies by their voices? 🥹🐧💕

In a busy penguin colony filled with LOTS of noisy chicks, parents and babies use their unique calls to help find one another. Imagine a playground packed with hundreds of kiddos all yelling, “MOMMMM!” and still knowing exactly which one belongs to you. 😂

It’s a fun reminder that little ones start learning to recognize familiar voices and sounds very early—and listening is an important part of language development, too! 👂🧠❤️

💬 Parent Question: Be honest… can you recognize YOUR little rascal’s cry, laugh, or “MOM!” from across a crowded room? 😂🙋‍♀️💕

🦋 FUN FACT OF THE DAY! 🦋

Did you know butterflies taste with their FEET? 😲🦋

Butterflies have special taste sensors on their feet. When they land on a plant, they can actually “taste” it just by standing on it! 🌸🌿

Imagine if our little rascals could do that… “Nope, Mom, I don’t like broccoli—I stepped on it and checked!” 😂🥦👣

Nature gives us so many fun ways to get kiddos curious, asking questions, and learning about the world around them. 🧠🌎💕

💬 Parent Question: If YOU could taste with your feet, what food would you step on first? 😂🍕🍓🍪
