☕ WBL Student Shout-Out: Michelle Sanchez

Great customer service starts with a smile—but behind every great barista are the skills, confidence, and experience to create a great customer experience!

RHS student Michelle Sanchez is putting those skills to work at Mill Haüs Coffee in Milliken, where she is gaining hands-on experience in hospitality and customer service while earning Work-Based Learning credit.

Michelle came prepared! Through RHS’s ACE and Business CTE Pathways, along with her experience working in The Exchange, our student-run school store, she developed skills in communication, teamwork, point-of-sale systems, food and beverage preparation, and customer service. She also earned her ServSafe Certification before joining the Mill Haus team.

Now, Michelle is building on that foundation—preparing specialty beverages and food, serving customers, collaborating with coworkers, and even helping train new employees! She plans to continue working at Mill Haus throughout the school year.

🔧 WBL Student Shout-Out: Asher Hext & Clayton Turnbull 🌱

Ever wonder what it takes to keep an entire school district running behind the scenes? This summer, RHS students Asher Hext and Clayton Turnbull are finding out firsthand as members of the Weld RE-5J Facilities Department!

No two days look exactly the same. From building maintenance and repairs to mowing, landscaping, groundskeeping, and equipment operation, Asher and Clayton are gaining hands-on experience while helping care for the schools and facilities that serve our students every day.

Clayton returned to the Facilities team after working with them last summer, building on skills developed through RHS’s Construction CTE Pathway. Asher joined the department this spring after developing workplace readiness and employability skills through the ACE Program.

Together, they’re strengthening skills in teamwork, problem-solving, equipment operation, maintenance, and the skilled trades—all while learning alongside experienced professionals.

📣 WBL Student Shout-Out: Christina Gumz 🏡

What happens when students have the opportunity to explore a career before graduating? For RHS senior Christina Gumz, two summers of Work-Based Learning have turned an interest in real estate into a potential career path!

This summer, Christina joined The Sall Team at C3 Real Estate Solutions, working alongside mentors Brittany and Brett Sall. From client meetings and marketing to staging homes, preparing for showings, hosting open houses, and observing closings, Christina has gained firsthand experience while strengthening her communication, organization, customer service, and professional skills.

Building on skills developed through RHS’s Business CTE Pathway, Christina is now taking the next step. She has been invited to continue working with The Sall Team during the school year while beginning the process of earning her Colorado real estate license! She also plans to compete in the FBLA Real Estate event this fall.

🎭 WBL Student Shout-Out: Remi Krank

When the curtain rises, the actors take center stage—but behind every great production is a talented technical crew making the magic happen!

RHS student Remi Krank is turning her passion for technical theater into real-world experience as a member of the technical crew at The Candlelight Dinner Playhouse.

After two years in the RHS theater program developing skills in stage lighting, sound, backstage operations, and production support, Remi is now applying those skills in a professional theater environment. Under the mentorship of Technical Director Josiah Buhre and The Candlelight production team, she is learning firsthand the teamwork, precision, and technical expertise required to bring live performances to life.

Even better—Remi plans to continue working at The Candlelight this fall, expanding her skills and exploring where technical theater could take her next!

🎯 WBL Student Shout-Out: Tristan Ailor

Work-Based Learning can happen in all kinds of workplaces—and every experience provides an opportunity to build skills that matter!

This summer, Roosevelt High School student Tristan Ailor is earning WBL credit while gaining hands-on experience at Rocky Mountain Archery. Through his work, Tristan is learning the ins and outs of the archery and outdoor recreation industry while developing skills in customer service, inventory management, and bow and arrow customization.

Whether he's helping a customer find the right equipment, managing inventory, or learning the attention to detail required to customize archery equipment, Tristan is building valuable communication, problem-solving, technical, and workplace skills along the way.

👏 His supervisor, Stewart King, has shared high praise for Tristan's work this summer—a great reflection of Tristan's work ethic, professionalism, and willingness to learn.

📣 WBL Student Shout-Out: Camp Invention Dream Team! 🤖💡

It takes more than great activities to make a summer camp unforgettable—it takes great people. This summer, five Roosevelt High School Work-Based Learning students stepped up as leaders, mentors, problem-solvers, and role models for elementary students at Weld RE-5J's Camp Invention!

👏 Megan Christy, Karla Herrera Salgado, Julian Keeling, Nariah Stanley, and Jolyn Turnbull worked alongside Camp Invention Coordinator Karen Wieser to create an engaging week of hands-on STEM learning.

Before campers even arrived, this team was preparing materials and organizing activities. Throughout the week, they helped students build, create, problem-solve, collaborate, and gain confidence.

The experience also brought together two RHS Career and Technical Education Pathways. Julian and Karla, from Engineering & Technology, used their STEM and problem-solving skills to support engineering challenges, while Megan, Nariah, and Jolyn, from Teacher Cadet, put their teaching and classroom skills into action.

And the experience doesn't stop with summer! Megan, Nariah, and Jolyn will continue working as paid teaching assistants in Weld RE-5J elementary schools this fall, while Julian and Karla will continue building their skills in Engineering & Technology and as leaders on the VEX Robotics Team.

❤️🩶 A huge thank you to Karen Wieser and the Camp Invention teaching team for mentoring these students and creating meaningful opportunities for them to lead and learn.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to The Weld Trust, whose generous grant made Camp Invention free for participating families—creating an incredible STEM experience for younger students while also providing meaningful Work-Based Learning opportunities for RHS students.

📣 WBL Student Shout-Out: Sadie Goscha 🔭☀️

What can start with one conversation? For Roosevelt High School junior Sadie Goscha, it opened the door to an incredible summer of scientific research, mentorship, and discovery!

Sadie first connected with astronomer Dr. Ben Forrest during an RHS Lunch & Learn. Rather than letting the conversation end there, Sadie took the initiative to ask if she could continue learning from him by developing her own astronomy research project. That initiative grew into an authentic research experience connecting Sadie with the C3VO collaboration and Finn Giddings from the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy.

Over the summer, Sadie has been using Python programming, computer simulations, scientific models, and data analysis to explore how the Sun works—including the movement of solar plasma and the magnetic forces behind solar flares. 🌞💻

This is Work-Based Learning at its best: taking the skills developed in the classroom and applying them alongside professionals to solve complex, real-world problems.

Sadie's foundation began in RHS's Engineering & Technology Career and Technical Education Pathway, and the learning isn't stopping with summer. This fall, she will continue her research while taking Calculus III and Differential Equations through Concurrent Enrollment at UNC.

👏 A huge thank you to Dr. Ben Forrest, Finn Giddings, and the researchers supporting Sadie's work for investing their time and expertise in a young researcher.

WBL WEDNESDAY | STUDENT SHOUT-OUT: DANIEL BINDER

For Daniel Binder, Work-Based Learning is about more than earning high school credit—it’s about building the skills, knowledge, and work ethic to contribute to his family’s farming operation for years to come.

This summer, Daniel is earning credit while working with B+ Farms – Binders Land and Livestock in Milliken, alongside his mentor, Keith Binder. And he’s doing the real work of agriculture.

🔧 Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment
🌾 Constructing and repairing fences
👷 Training and mentoring younger employees
🦺 Applying workplace safety and OSHA practices
⏱️ Managing priorities, workflow, and daily responsibilities
💡 Problem-solving when the unexpected happens

Daniel came into his WBL experience with a strong foundation from Roosevelt High School’s Construction and Agriculture CTE Pathways, along with both his OSHA 10 and Home Builders Institute (HBI) certifications. Now, he’s putting that learning into practice every day.

And he’s not stopping when summer ends! Daniel plans to continue working with B+ Farms throughout the school year while participating in RHS Work-Based Learning as he works toward his goal of a career in farming and equipment maintenance.

In just one week, the halls of Roosevelt High School will be filled with Rough Riders as we welcome students back for another incredible school year!

Before the first bell rings on Monday, August 17, we have two important opportunities to help students and families start the year with confidence.

All RHS students and families are encouraged to attend! Hear from school administrators, walk your student's schedule, meet teachers, and connect with the people and resources that will help make this a successful school year.
