Students in Dr. Viscarra’s Introduction to Sociology got a hauntingly good lesson this Halloween! Using Cooley’s “Looking Glass Self,” they explored how our sense of self is shaped by how we think others see us. After watching The Twilight Zone’s eerie episode “The Mask,” students created their own masks revealing how society reflects back their identities. These are the fang-tastic results!

New faculty publication! Assistant Professor Danielle Pullan as part of an international team of coauthors have published the Committee Membership Dataset. This dataset covers 12 European countries plus the US and New Zealand, documenting over 130,000 positions held by nearly 15,000 different members of parliament over 35 years. The authors harmonized the roles and committee issue areas to facilitate comparison across different legislatures. As an initial demonstration of the dataset's potential applications, the authors show that women across all countries are more likely to be assigned to low and medium prestige committees rather than high prestige ones, and as members rather than in leadership positions. We look forward to the ways other scholars will use this data in legislative studies! You can access the dataset here (https://doi.org/10.7802/2940) and read the working paper about it here (tinyurl.com/vf54r78p).
