Look at this great post about our very own Katie Howell, one of the members of Dr. Stoyanova's Service Learning course this fall. Each year, the Service Learning students get practical experience by engaging local public school students in bilingual storytimes in Spanish and French. We are proud of the work our students continue to do, and we love to see them out serving the Milledgeville / Baldwin County community!

The Language Resource Center (LRC) will host "LRC Video Chat: Playing Host to the World Cup (A FIFA World Cup Lookback)" on Wednesday, September 16, from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Despite its title, the "LRC Video Chat," does not entail the online Teams or Zoom environment you may be thinking of, but rather a laidback, in-person opportunity to watch a short, culturally themed video and engage in friendly face-to-face discussion afterward. The video will be screened in the LRC film viewing area. Join us on our cozy sectional sofa to watch, discuss and expand your cultural paradigms.

****Due to space constraints, seating is limited to the first 10 attendees, and we will begin promptly at 5 p.m. *****

Both the video and discussion will be in English, so we welcome anyone who is interested to come and join us.

The language we speak is a deep part of our humanity, as it connects us to the people and experiences most dear to us. Set a challenge for yourself this fall: if you meet someone whose native language is something other than English, try learning a few words in that language and greet your new friend that way when you see them on campus. Sometimes just making a small effort can mean the world to someone!

Today, the Language Resource Center enjoyed a visit from Sra Rosado's Spanish III class from Georgia College Early College . Students learned about LRC resources and then enjoyed children's books, coloring sheets, and conversation cards in Spanish. We love working with our GCEC campus neighbors! Happy Friday, Bobcats! This week's Foodie Friday takes us to Italy. Cacio e pepe is a traditional pasta dish believed to have been created by shepherds in the countryside of Lazio, Abruzzo, Umbria and Tuscany in the 18th or 19th century. 'Cacio e pepe' means 'cheese and pepper', and this dish achieves simple perfection by pouring hot pasta onto finely grated pecorino romano cheese, then mixing it with freshly ground pepper and a small quantity of the pasta water. The starch in the cooking water helps the cheese to melt and the flavors to bind into a tasty and creamy dish. Yum!

Would you like to take your French speaking skills to the next level? Would you like to make a new friend in France and learn about their culture and their experience as a college student in another country? Why not try Teletandem?

Teletandem is an opportunity, in partnership with the Université de Lille, for GCSU students taking French to engage in video chats with a student in Lille for mutual conversation practice in French and English.

There is no cost to participate. Just scan the QR code or go to https://forms.office.com/r/z2Uahu4X4G to fill out the interest form. In the coming weeks, you will be matched with a partner in Lille who best aligns with your interests and language level, and then the fun and cultural exchange begins!

We hope all of you are enjoying a restful Labor Day weekend! This week's Monday Musing comes from an old Chinese proverb. One of the many benefits of learning a new language is how much it broadens your perspective about the world. As you learn this semester, seize the opportunity whenever possible to ponder the new words, traditions, cultural norms and ways of life to which you are exposed. The world is wide, and there is so much beauty and newness to take in!
