On-Call Tutoring for Parents and Kids Alike!

Question & Answer Time #4

“Do you work with special needs children?” It depends entirely on what they need. I have no special training to deal with any particular disability, whether physical or mental, but I do have some experience dealing with kids who find they learn differently then their peers, and who struggle to keep up as a result. No matter what you or they need, I'm happy to sit down with you to see whether I can be helpful.

Question & Answer Time #3

"I know [my child] needs help, but I don't know if you can provide the help he needs. In other words, what if he doesn't like you? Do you have a money-back guarantee?" The good news is that you don't have to make a decision like this blindly. What we will do is sit down together, you and your child, and take some time to get to know one another. You'll be "interviewing" me to see whether you think I can be of use to your child, and actually, I'll be doing the same with the both of you. I have no wish to waste your time if I don't think I can be helpful! (My reputation would suffer.) There is no charge for this informal "interview." Regarding a money-back guarantee... Well, no, I do not offer that. BUT! I also don't require payment in advance. You pay when you're satisfied.

Question & Answer Time #2

"Why are you so expensive?" or, conversely, "Why are you so cheap?" You just can't win sometimes, that's why. LOL Seriously, I"m expensive because I have mouths to feed. And if you think I'm cheap, don't question it, just take advantage of me! The reason I've chosen my current prices is because I believe that's what the market will bear. If I'm wrong, I'll adjust, as any good economist would.

I tutor English & History (all grade levels, inc. college), Math (from Geometry & Algebra 2 on down), and Science (from Biology 101 & Chemistry 101 on down) at an hourly rate, and I offer specific courses in Accounting, Apologetics, Bible, Economics, Income Tax Preparation, General Finance, Law, Philosophy, Poetry, Politics, & Worldview at a per course rate.

HOURLY Rates are $5/hr if you come to me or $10/hr if I come to you in Milledgeville (surrounding areas will be more). For these purposes, tutoring refers to problem-specific tutoring, explained below. General tutoring will be treated and charged as a class.

CLASS Rates are $10/lesson for the duration of the course, regardless of location. Minimum of six lessons required, but no payment will be required in advance. English, History, Math, and Science courses will have no predetermined length, but will continue as long as you deem necessary. Other courses will be 12 lessons long, assuming a good level of student interaction.

DISCOUNTS. Hourly Rate discounts are available for groups of 3 or more.
No size discounts for classes. (No extra charge for classes that exceed 12 lessons.) However, for any class which has a text, there will be a $1 discount for bring the text to class, and another for being able to demonstrate that they have read the weekly assignment.

MAXIMUM Group Size is 6, but I can tutor more than one group.

PROBLEM-SPECIFIC TUTORING. Tutoring works best when one has a specific problem he needs to tackle. A student who does not know why he needs help will have far less success than one who can identify his weakness specifically. “I need help with math,” is a much more time-consuming and costly enterprise than “I need help understanding Roman numerals,” for example. A student who simply “needs help with math,” would be more likely to need me to treat him as if he were in a class than one who can identify his problem.

GENERAL TUTORING is when you simply want me to teach your child one or more particular subjects.

PARENTAL TUTORING. Everything I offer is available to parents as well, at the same rate, if they want to be the ones to learn how to overcome their child's difficulties. Parents are also welcome to sit in on their child's lesson at no charge. However, please keep in mind, it has been my experience that children are less likely to interact when a parent is present.

COURSES. English, History, Math, & Science courses will cover whatever material is contained in the curriculum you have chosen. I can choose the curriculum if you wish, tailored to your child. The other courses I offer cover specific topics. Finance, for example, will explain the nature of banking and credit, generally, as well as more specific items like balancing a checkbook, among many other things. A full list of topics covered in each class is available upon request. I will also be posting syllabi to this page at various points in the future.

WORLDVIEW. All tutoring is done from a Christian worldview, and seeks to tie each subject in which each of the others, rather than acting as if, for example, English and Math have no bearing on one another; the same goes for Science and Law, or History and Poetry. The specific “brand”/worldview of Christianity I teach from is theologically closest to the Reformed Baptist tradition. Just as no denominational label is just right, the same is true of my political views. The broadest labels that encompass me are “classical liberal” (a la Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry) and “libertarian” (lowercase “l”), which I don't like to use because of the popular misconception that to be libertarian is to be libertine (which many libertarians, admittedly, are). Economically, I teach from the perspective of Adam Smith, Ludwig von Mises, and Friedrich Hayek, and I repudiate the perspective of John Maynard Keynes.

BIO. I am 45 years old, recently separated. I have four children, three girls and a boy, the oldest of which is grown, married, and on her own. Of the four, she is the only one to have not been homeschooled entirely. She went to private school for one year and to public school for two and a half. My remaining children, who live with me, are 18, 16 (the boy), and 13.

Welcome! (Especially if you read this whole thing!)
