Mission statement:
Dutchess Day School is an elementary and middle school that provides a strong academic foundation, values children's natural curiosity, and fosters an enduring enthusiasm for learning. In an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, students are encouraged to take intellectual, athletic, and artistic risks and to develop independence, confidence, and imagination. In our Lower School, everyday moments - playing outside, sharing a laugh, and learning alongside friends - help children build the confidence, connection, and sense of belonging that make school feel like home.

Science in Action: Our Upper School scientists have been diving into hands-on exploration, putting their learning to work in the lab. Students investigated the properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids, sorting elements by conductivity, luster, and malleability. They also explored double displacement reactions, worked with Bunsen burners, and conducted flame tests watching compounds light up in brilliant colors.
From beakers to burners, students are learning science by doing: asking questions, testing ideas, observing results, and discovering how scientific concepts come to life.

Our Preschool program is a place where young children feel known, supported, and excited to learn. Through play, exploration, creative experiences, and caring relationships, children build confidence, make friends, and develop a strong foundation for the years ahead.

A Perfect Night for Movie Night! What a wonderful evening together! With perfect weather, happy faces all around campus, delicious food trucks, and plenty of popcorn and candy, Movie Night was a night to remember. We are so grateful for the generosity and spirit of our DDS parents. You are what makes this community so special, and we’re incredibly thankful for the moments you help create for our children and families.

Learning by Doing. Our 8th graders are kicking off their Bush Craft unit in Design & Innovation and Head of School Matt Heard joined them for a hands-on lesson in tying knots. Learning practical skills is just the beginning. Through Bush Craft, students will have opportunities to work with their hands, solve problems, build confidence, and discover how creativity and resourcefulness come together in the outdoors. A great start to an experiential unit where there’s plenty to learn, make, and explore!

Our 5th graders brought the baked goods to our annual 7-aside soccer tournament, hosting a bake sale that raised more than $1,300 for River Haven Youth Shelter. Their generosity and initiative are a wonderful example of how service learning at DDS connects classroom values to meaningful action in the community.

There’s something special about growing up together. Friendships are an important part of the journey, learning to listen, support one another, laugh together, and be part of a community where everyone has a place. These five remind us that some of the most meaningful moments at school happen simply when students are together.

What a thoughtful and engaging PA meeting last Friday with Whit Ryan of ClearView Coaching. Whit led a special conversation on The Amazing Generation, building on the four weeks of activities and reflection she shared with our families over the summer. The meeting gave parents an opportunity to pause, listen, share perspectives, and think more deeply about the experiences shaping today’s children, and how we can support them as they grow. We’re grateful to Whit for continuing the conversation with our community, and to all of the parents who joined us for such a meaningful evening.

What a wonderful day at Millbrook Community Day! We loved spending time with neighbors, friends, and fellow community members and celebrating the people and shared spirit that make Millbrook such a special place to call home.
