Sunny View Elementary students have a new playground this year thanks to a community effort involving the school PTO, teacher Brandi Roddy, Polk County Schools and local businesses.

The long-planned project gained momentum when Roddy secured a $15,000 Gateway Wellness Foundation grant, with the district providing matching funds and the PTO contributing additional support.

The new structure was installed in August, and Sunny View students are loving their new area for recess.

On a recent school day, third graders in Chip Cash’s class at Sunny View Elementary headed out to play, just as generations of students have done at recess.

Second graders in Ginger Turner’s class at Sunny View Elementary made it rain in the classroom while learning about the water cycle.

During a “Rain in a Jar” experiment, students observed how water droplets collect in clouds and eventually become heavy enough to fall as precipitation. The hands-on activity gave students a visual way to explore how rain forms.

Second graders in Ginger Turner’s class at Sunny View Elementary School created a little rain of their own while learning about the water cycle.

All four Polk County elementary schools are using the PurposeFull People curriculum from Character Strong this year, giving students a shared approach to learning about character traits such as kindness, responsibility, empathy, perseverance and courage.

Each school kicked off the program in its own way during August, from a Kindness Dance at Saluda and a Rocket-themed launch at Polk Central to a Kindness Tree at Tryon and classroom Kindness Contracts at Sunny View.

Polk County elementary students are beginning the 2026-27 school year with a shared approach to character development through the expansion of Character Strong to all four elementary schools.

Some of the most important work in a school happens behind the scenes.

At Sunny View Elementary, secretary/data manager Angela Wilson is one of the people staff, students and families count on every day. Principal Ronette Dill says Wilson helps keep the school organized, solves problems, supports staff and makes families and visitors feel welcome.

Most importantly, she knows and cares for Sunny View’s students - celebrating them, comforting them and noticing when something isn’t quite right. nny-view-run-each-day/
