This Juneteenth, we recognize a day of long-overdue freedom.
For decades, some of the greatest players who ever lived were shut out of the majors, so they built their own. The Negro Leagues gave us players like Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige, brilliance that packed ballparks long before the majors made room.
When Jackie Robinson stepped onto Ebbets Field in 1947, he opened a door, one that generations of players have walked through to redefine the game.
So much of what we love about baseball exists because African American players refused to be told the game wasn't theirs. Today, we celebrate their legacy and the continued excellence of players of color today.

On this day in 1888, "Casey at the Bat" first appeared in the San Francisco Examiner, and its author was too embarrassed to sign it.
Ernest Thayer thought the poem was bad verse, so he hid behind the pen name "Phin" and figured that was the end of it. It went on to become the most famous baseball poem ever written, recited on vaudeville stages and memorized by generations of fans.
Funny how that works. The thing Thayer was sure no one would remember outlived everything else he wrote.

On May 28, 1946, Yankee Stadium hosted its first-ever night game.
Unfortunately for the home team, the Washington Senators spoiled the occasion, edging the Yankees 2-1.
Night baseball opened the game up to working fans who couldn't make afternoon games, changing attendance, culture, and the way America experienced baseball forever!
