Last year, Mathnasium was honored to be voted Best Tutor, and we would love the opportunity to retain that title again this year.

What started as one Mathnasium center in Milford has grown into two locations, with our second center opening in Woodbridge this past year. Both centers are proudly operated by the Happy Ratio team, and together we now serve more than 140 students throughout the Greater New Haven area.

Over the years, we’ve helped students achieve perfect scores on the SBAC, earn Top 20 National rankings in the Math Kangaroo competition, place among the top students in Connecticut, and reach the 97th, 98th, and 99th percentiles on STAR Math and i-Ready assessments. Most importantly, we’ve helped hundreds of students build confidence and develop a stronger understanding of math.

🌟 Student of the Month in Orange: Jason! 🌟

Jason has been with Mathnasium for a little over a year, and his progress has been incredible. Starting as a 6th grader working on pre-algebra, he is now a 7th grader tackling geometry, a course typically taken by high school sophomores in 10th grade.

His dedication, consistency, and positive attitude have truly paid off. We are so proud of how far he has come and excited to see what he accomplishes next!

Danielle and Michelle joined Mathnasium about a year ago, and their progress has been nothing short of incredible.

They started with sixth-grade level math skills, and through consistent effort and dedication, they are now learning Algebra 1, a class typically taken in 9th grade.

That’s years of advancement in just one year.

This week, our students are thinking big… like space-level big 🌕✨

From comparing the height of the Artemis rocket to the Statue of Liberty, to calculating how fast a spacecraft travels to the Moon, to even exploring the physics behind orbital motion… our students are building real-world math skills across every grade level.

📊 SBAC Testing in May: What Amity Parents Should Know

SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment) is coming up in May, and along with STAR and i-Ready, it plays a role in understanding your child’s math readiness and placement pathway.

📈 Understanding SBAC Levels

Students are placed into 4 levels:

Level 4 → Exceeds expectations (top performers)
Level 3 → Meets expectations
Level 2 → Approaching
Level 1 → Below expectations

📍 Local Insight (Amity Area)

SBAC results provide a helpful benchmark to understand how students are performing in math across the district.

👉 What many parents don’t realize:
Being “good at math” in class doesn’t always translate to Level 4 performance on SBAC.

⚠️ What Many Parents Misunderstand

Level 3 = meeting expectations, but not necessarily advanced
Level 4 is often what aligns with accelerated / advanced pathways long-term
Many strong students plateau at Level 3 without targeted challenge

March 19 - Math Kangaroo International Competition

We will be hosting a record of 44 students for the Math Kangaroo competition at our Woodbridge and Milford locations. 60,000 students in the United States and several million worldwide are competing in Math Kangaroo this year!

Of the 44 participants:

• 18 are from Woodbridge

• 10 are from Orange

• 3 are from Milford

• 0 are from Bethany

Many of these students have earned perfect SBAC scores and rank in the 97th–99th percentile on STAR and iReady. Majority are placed in accelerated or advanced math tracks.

Math Kangaroo attracts some of the strongest math students in our local community, students who are already performing well and are looking for deeper challenge.

If your child consistently performs at the top on SBAC, STAR, or iReady and we have not yet connected, we would welcome the opportunity to meet. Some of the strongest math students in the Greater New Haven area train and compete through our center.

Spring Testing Timeline – What Families Should Know

March through June is one of the most important stretches of the academic year.

Here is what’s coming up:

March–April: SAT
Many high school students will take the SAT in March or April. For most students, this is not a one-time event. The first test is often a benchmark that reveals content gaps, pacing issues, and strategy opportunities. The period between spring testing and summer is one of the most strategic windows to improve scores before a retake in late summer or fall.

May: SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment)
SBAC measures grade-level mastery aligned with Connecticut standards. These results often influence math placement decisions and give families insight into whether a student is truly secure in current-grade standards.

May: STAR and iReady Assessments
These assessments report national percentile rankings. A student may be “at grade level” but not necessarily competitive for accelerated placement. Understanding percentile data is key, especially for families considering advanced math tracks.

June: Final Exams
Finals are cumulative. Concepts from earlier in the year resurface, and foundational gaps become more visible. Waiting until June to address weaknesses is often too late.

Between now and summer is a powerful planning window. Whether your student is preparing for a retake, aiming for accelerated placement, or simply wanting to finish the year strong, having a clear strategy makes a difference.
