Sometimes you don’t realize how much visual strain you are experiencing until you finally feel relief.

Kristen noticed an immediate difference when she placed her Blue-Grey Irlen Overlay over her computer screen. Her eyes felt less tired and strained—and now she is looking forward to receiving her customized Irlen Spectral Filters.

If reading, computer work, or bright screens leave your eyes feeling tired or uncomfortable, Irlen Syndrome may be worth exploring.

These brain scans help show why Irlen Spectral Filters are about much more than simply changing the color of what someone sees.

These are three-dimensional SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) brain scans from the Amen Clinic. SPECT imaging measures patterns of blood flow and activity in the brain.

In the top scan, taken without Irlen lenses, the white areas represent regions described in the original Irlen material as being in heavy use or “hot.” There are numerous areas of increased activity.

In the bottom scan, the same brain is shown while using individualized Irlen lenses. The pattern appears noticeably different.

The important point isn't that colored lenses simply make things look different. Irlen Spectral Filters are individually selected to reduce the visual stress experienced by that particular person. The SPECT images provide a striking illustration of how the brain's activity pattern can look different when the appropriate spectral filters are used.

And this is exactly why Irlen Filters aren't one-color-fits-all. The specific color combination is determined through Irlen Diagnostic Testing and is unique to the individual.

A child can know how to read and still struggle with reading.

Maybe they lose their place. Their eyes get tired. Reading becomes harder the longer they do it. They avoid books, or their comprehension drops even though they can read the words.

Sometimes, the problem isn’t effort or ability. Visual processing difficulties associated with Irlen Syndrome may be making the page harder and more uncomfortable to process.

If you’re noticing these signs as your child settles back into school, it may be worth looking a little deeper.

The first few weeks of school can tell us a lot.

As children settle back into classrooms, homework, reading, screens, and bright school lighting, you may start noticing things that weren’t as obvious during the summer.

Headaches after school.
Tired or strained eyes.
Complaints about bright lights or screens.
Losing their place while reading.
Words that seem to move or blur.
Daydreaming, zoning out, or taking longer to finish work.

These struggles can sometimes be signs of Irlen Syndrome—and they shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as a child being tired, distracted, or not trying hard enough.

For those with Irlen Syndrome, the right color can make a significant difference. Irlen Overlays can help with reading, while individually prescribed Irlen Spectral Filters can provide support throughout the whole day.

As the school year gets underway, pay attention to the little clues. They may be telling you something important.

How did the first day of school go?

For some kids, the answer is simply, “Great!”

For others, the clues may come out in little comments later…

“My eyes are tired.”
“The lights were so bright.”
“I got a headache.”
“Reading was hard.”
“I couldn’t concentrate.”
“The words looked weird.”

One comment after a long first day may not mean much. But if you start hearing the same things again and again as the school year gets underway, pay attention.

Reading difficulties, visual discomfort, light sensitivity, headaches, eye strain, and difficulty concentrating can all be associated with Irlen Syndrome.

This school year, listen to the little things your child tells you. They may be trying to explain something they don’t yet have the words for.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the struggle—it’s not knowing why things feel so difficult.

Reading that leaves your eyes exhausted.
Bright lights that feel overwhelming.
Words that blur, move, or become harder to process.
Everyday environments that seem to take more effort than they should.

For someone with Irlen Syndrome, finding an explanation can be powerful. And finding the right individualized color through Irlen Spectral Filters can make everyday visual tasks feel much more comfortable.

You may have Irlen—but the world can feel easier.

What if some of the things you’ve always considered “normal”… aren’t experienced by everyone?

Dimming every screen.
Wanting to escape fluorescent lighting.
Rereading the same paragraph because it just won’t stick.
Feeling uneasy or unsure on escalators.

When you’ve experienced something your entire life, you don’t have anything to compare it to. You may simply assume everyone sees and feels the same way you do.

For some people, experiences like these can be signs of Irlen Syndrome — a visual processing disorder that can affect reading, light sensitivity, depth perception, and visual comfort.

Sometimes the first step toward finding an answer is realizing there might be a reason for what you’re experiencing.

Which one did you think was completely normal?

Every mom wants to see her child enjoy reading—not avoid it, struggle through it, or feel exhausted by it.

That’s why updates like this make me smile!

For some children, reading difficulties aren’t about ability or effort. Visual stress can make the words on the page uncomfortable, distorted, or simply harder to process.

When Irlen Syndrome is contributing to those struggles, the right individualized Irlen Spectral Filters can make reading more comfortable—and that can change how a child feels about picking up a book.

Sometimes the goal isn’t just to help a child read better.

It’s to help them WANT to read.
