A bit of music fun to start off the new year!!

In our studio, students are developing their own original composition ideas right now and we explore different compositional techniques in our classes and theory books. In this video, the pianist takes six famous ringtones and develops them in the style of six different Classical composers (Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, Rachmaninoff and Ravel). I hope it will inspire you to check out more of their music or to improvise and try out different styles yourself! He adds little brief explanations for what he's done to the ringtone to make it sound like each composer. Enjoy!! - Keren

We have about 7 or 8 Saturday Workshops during the school year, and in early December, we bring out our 13 keyboards and set them up in our largest studio. We use the keyboards for playing Holiday Ensembles at our Enrichment Class week, but during the weekend before, at our Saturday Workshop, we have a special Improvisation Class. With all the keyboards set up, we have the perfect opportunity to teach improvisation to the different age groups. Improvisation is a special skill involving the spontaneous creation of music, and it is taught by our teachers who are trained in this art. Here is one of our Saturday Improvisation Classes.

Each year in early December, our studio hosts Holiday Ensemble classes. In the months leading up to these sessions, students prepare a variety of Christmas and seasonal pieces, then come together in ensemble groups organized by age and skill level. The repertoire includes a mix of solos and duets which students perform collaboratively.

We transform our largest studio by bringing together all 13 keyboards—normally tucked into corners, along walls, and in storage areas throughout the studio. These keyboards offer a wide range of instrumental sounds, which students can select to enrich the music and create a full, orchestral experience as they play together.

Our youngest and newest students, including those as young as four to six years old who may have had only a month or two of lessons, participate with the help of parents or older siblings. The result is a joyful, inclusive experience where students of all ages make music together.

On November 14, 16 and 29, three of our students performed their Suzuki Book One Recitals in their homes. Their teacher attended, and they invited family and friends to share in their accomplishment. The students presented the entire book of 18 pieces, completely by memory as part of the Suzuki tradition. We commend each student for the many hours of practice that was dedicated to finishing all the details, both musical and technical, for each piece.

At the conclusion of the first book our students have learned to incorporate many skills: playing with dynamics and marks of expression, balancing the hands so the accompaniments are softer than the melody, bringing out the variety of articulations (long ringing tones, gentle lifts and short, bouncy staccatos), expressing a beautiful singing melody, understanding the different moods and styles, and experiencing a range of fast, moderate and slow playing. Congratulations to our students and to their teachers for this development of strong musicianship at such early levels. These skills are with them for a lifetime of joyful piano playing.

Each year our students take part in the Achievement Awards Auditions of the Lehigh Valley Music Teachers Association. This year on November 22, they presented two pieces for evaluation, and the students who received the highest rating of Super Plus were invited back the next day to take part in the Honors Recitals. We congratulate all the students who put in extra practice hours to get ready for this event. Here are our students who took part in the recital on November 23 at Foy Hall, Moravian University.

On November 9, three students from Milford Square Music Studio competed in the Music Teachers National Association Junior Piano Performance Competition at the state level. There were 13 entrants in the competition, and we were thrilled that one of our students earned Honorable Mention. Our students spent many practice hours in preparation for this event, and they all made significant progress in their musical growth.

Our students who took part and qualified in the PA Music Teachers Association Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival local auditions, traveled to Messiah College on November 8th to play in Showcase Recitals. All of our students played a solo piano piece in one of the recital halls, and four groups of our students played duets. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the performance opportunity.

Each year our students are invited to enter the PA Music Teachers Association Keystone Composition Competition. This year we had two students enter their original piano compositions, Pirates at Sea and For My Brothers. They spent many hours composing and writing out the pieces with music composition software before submitting them for adjudication. We congratulate these students for their accomplishment.

In early summer, our three piano teachers, Keren Ligowski, Emily Bubnis, and Gloriana Sewell attended the PA Music Teachers Annual Conference, held this year at Lycoming College. They enjoyed a weekend of community with other music educators across the state and a variety of workshops, lectures and recitals presented by guest teachers and artists. Our studio believes in ongoing teacher education, and we make the effort each year to improve our piano skills, both for playing and for teaching, and to stay current with the more recent developments in piano and music instruction.

Suzuki Book One Recital
In our Suzuki program, when students complete the first Suzuki book of 18 pieces, they perform the entire book at a recital in their home, completely by memory with all the dynamic and interpretive elements. They can invite family and friends, and their teacher comes to their home to take part in the celebration and to support the student. Here is a student who just gave his recital and is enjoying the satisfaction of a job well done. In the background on his piano are some of the trophies earned in our contests and the end of the year statuettes that each student receives at the Spring Recital.
