University of Illinois Extension, Henry, Mercer, Rock Island and Stark counties serves over 50,000 youth and adult residents each year. U of I Extension offers educational programs in five broad areas: healthy society; food security and safety; environmental stewardship; sustainable and profitable food production and marketing systems and enhancing youth, family and community well-being. As part of the nationwide Cooperative Extension System, U of I Extension also is able to draw on research-based expertise from land-grant universities all across the country. Volunteers who serve on our local advisory council provide direction for U of I Extension programming, ensuring that programs continue to meet critical local needs.

• Collect/make art from natural materials
• Go for a hike or bike ride
• Visit a local orchard or fall festival

Where does the road lead? In recent years, more attention has been brought to the importance of estate planning for family farm businesses.

As the average age of commercial farmers in Illinois is 60-plus, and most landowners are 65 and older, planning is an essential step for any business.

Kevin Brooks, Extension commercial agriculture educator, developed a blog series on farm estate planning in which he explores the basic need for a plan in place and where to start with what can seem overwhelming to many.

Weekly blogs explore the starting point, strategies, implications and implementations, financial plans, taxes, and how or what to prepare to keep things moving even after.
