It’s a busy week in Milan FFA, and we have so much to look forward to! Tomorrow is bring your Farm Equipment to School Day, and we can’t wait to see everyone bring their tractors, side-by-sides, and other equipment to school! Then, join us Friday for our annual Hog Roast before the football game, featuring a delicious meal and Culver’s ice cream! Make sure to grab your tickets and come out to support Milan FFA. The Natural Resources class is gearing up for a busy fall. Students are preparing the hydroponics tower for strawberry plants arriving this week. Next month they will start their Salmon in the Classroom project. We will receive 150 salmon eggs to care for in our huge tank. Around the first of the year the eggs will hatch and the student will document their growth. Next April they will take a field trip to Flat rock dam and release the 5-6 inch salmon in the river.

The Broiler chicks have arrived!!! The Zoology students are learning about raising chickens for the Annual FFA Broiler contest. The. Chicks are under close observation by the students. Their feed is weighted as added. Each group has 25 chicks to start. They enjoy going to the barn to care for them and each different hour has a chore to do to ensure they are raising a high quality project. Of course a lot of holding time is involved.

The Botany students are learning about our drone. They all learned how to unfold and check the batteries. Next they all had a chance to program the drone over a field. Marking places not to spray yet cover all the acreage. Then the student got to fly the drone over the bean field. This gave them first hand experience about a new and upcoming job in the Agriculture field. Our drone can spray and spread seed. Other drones are used to deliver supplies to stranded hikers, and find lost people or animals.

The Annual Milan FFA Hog Roast is fast approaching!!
Next Friday October 16 from 4:30 to 6:30. A pulled pork sandwich, Mac and cheese, applesauce, baked beans corn bread your drink and Culver’s custard for dessert!! Tickets. Can be purchased from any FFA member for $12 or at the door. Come and enjoy a great meal and good friends, play some games before kick off of the Big Reds football game. Hope to see you there supporting our wonderful FFA members.

DRIVE YOUR FARM EQUIPMENT TO SCHOOL DAY!

Milan High School FFA is hosting Drive Your Farm Equipment to School Day on October 14th, and we are encouraging as many students as possible to participate!

Students can bring a tractor, side-by-side, four-wheeler, or a farm truck to school and help us celebrate agriculture and our farming community.

If your student is interested in participating, please have them speak with Mr. Federer in Room J118 ahead of time about what they plan to bring.

We would love to see the school parking lot filled with farm equipment!

The time is almost here for the Annual Milan FFA Hog Roast. This year’s event will be held on Friday October 16 before the Big Reds football game. Times have been adjusted so you will be able to watch kickoff. We will be serving dinner from 4:30 to 6:30, the price per ticket is $12 each. Your dinner includes a pulled pork sandwich, Mac and cheese, baked beans, applesauce, cornbread and a drink. This year our dessert will be Culver’s custard and a cookie. Our members hope you come and enjoy a great meal, good friendship play some games and have a great start to a Friday night under the lights.

Our Ag Mechanics class is busy finishing the wall between the livestock area and workshop area. The students are doing a fantastic job learning new skills and working together as a team to get the job done right. This is the second year for this class and soon the barn will be ready for working on tractors, and expanding their knowledge. Great job Ag Mechanics class!!

The Botany class learned an important skill for most farmers growing crops. How to figure the average yield per acre. They used our FFA land lab which is planted in beans this year. Soon the field will be harvested and they will get to check how close their calculations are. An interesting fact Washtenaw Co has the most acreage planted in beans however Lenawee Co has the highest average yield per acre. The state average is 50 bushels per acre.
