This weekend we portrayed elements of Colonel John McIntosh’s 3rd Georgia Battalion. In November of 1778, McIntosh and 127 rank and file of the 3rd were sent to reinforce the garrison at Fort Morris in Sunbury, Georgia. They arrived just prior to the British envelopment of the town and fort. When McIntosh received the British demands to surrender the garrison he replied: “We, Sir, are fighting the battle of America, and therefore disdain to remain in neuter till its fate is determined. As to surrendering the fort, receive this laconic reply, COME AND TAKE IT.” For the first time in two hundred and forty-six years we replicated their march from Midway Church to Historic Fort Morris State Park. All proceeds went to the Friends of Fort Morris for future projects. Big thank you to Jason Baker and Daniele Izlar at Fort Morris State Historic Site for all their help. We also wish to thank Dr. Peter Winn Martin, Cecil Greenwell, and Phil Odom of The Friends of Fort Morris for their help with logistics. Portraying some of Colonel Samuel Elbert’s Georgians for the 245th Anniversary of the Battle of Savannah. Special thanks to Coastal Heritage Society for giving us the opportunity to do some interp with them today. We enjoyed being able to tell the story of the Georgia Continentals during the American Revolution. We received a number of great questions from museum guests as well.

Portraying Lt. Strother’s Company of the 2nd Georgia Battalion.

“Sunday, 11th. Came to Frederica, where we were Joined by Lieut. Strother & his party and likewise by Capt. Maxwell with twelve Volunteers from Liberty County to Act with us on the Expedition; Landed & Air'd our men; Frederica was once a pretty little Town as Appears by the Ruins, having been burnt down some years since; the port at this place with a little expense might be made Defensible and might, if Properly Garrisoned, be a means of Protecting great part of our Southern Frontiers; there is about twelve Men. that bear Arms here, in my opinion all Tories—their Capt. Ditter says otherwise of himself and informed me that about 6 or 8 of the Inhabitants had lately gone to Florida for Protection.” - Samuel Elbert, May 11th, 1777
