Hello Shark Families,
We hope you are enjoying the Memorial Day Weekend! Now that we start school in August, Memorial Day means the beginning of the last week of school! There is no school Monday, and Wednesday is our 5th Grade Celebration. There was a calendar change a few months ago since we had no snow days this year - which made Friday the last day of school. We go to school FULL DAYS Tuesday through Friday and Report Cards will be sent home Friday.
It's hard to believe this is our last Family Shark Bytes for the 23-24 school year!

THANK YOU for volunteering for events this year! We look forward to seeing you and having you volunteer during the 2024-25 school year! Please save the date for August 15, our Meet and Greet/Supply Drop Off. Details will be sent later this summer but it will be held from 5-7 PM.
Thank you for your partnership and have a wonderful summer!

Hello Shark Families,
We could not have asked for better weather for Field Day! Thank you to those who volunteered so that we could have many activities for our sharks; thank you to our PTA for providing Kona Ice; and a huge thank you to Mrs. Latura for all of her planning and organizing. It was a fantastic day thanks to our Shark Community!
We have two more family events this week! Wednesday is Gelati Celesti Spirit Night from 3-9 PM and Thursday is our Buy One Get One (BOGO) Book Fair Family Night from 3:30-6:30 PM. Get a tasty treat Wednesday then get some books to read this summer Thursday :)
Important Reminder: The loop in front of the school entrance is the FIRE LANE. We can use it for parent drop off and pick up because you are in the car and can move in case of emergency, but this is also why we ask you not arrive before 8 AM for drop off or before 2:45 for pick up. By law, there should be NO PARKING in the loop. As we experienced this week, fire trucks had to park in the loop/fire lane. All school parking should be in a space in the parking lot, including dropping off students after 8:30 and picking them up before dismissal each day. We must keep the loop empty for emergency vehicles as well as not back up Bailey Bridge Rd.
As we enter the last two weeks of school, we want to keep as much structure as possible. This week we had lots of tardies and early dismissals. If your shark doesn't ride the bus, they should be in their seats when the bell rings. What may seem like only a few minutes has them walking into class after the teacher has already begun the day. Please remind your shark, as we are, to follow our expectations each day. Self Control, Honesty, Accountability, Respect and Kindness should be shown everywhere in the building and while on the bus so our fun events will be fun for all.

Hello Shark Families,
We want to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all of our Shark Moms. Thank you for all you do!
Our annual Field Day is Friday! Please remember that due to parking availability and for the safety of our sharks, visitors are not allowed on Field Day - only volunteers who are registered through the office. Since we have LOTS of volunteers and limited parking areas, please carpool with a friend or neighbor if possible. Please make sure your child comes to school with sunscreen on, wearing appropriate clothes and sneakers, and brings a water bottle, hat, sunglasses, etc. Students will get their FREE field day shirt on Friday and will change into it before Field Day starts.
Also, don't forget our Cereal Drive! Our goal is to bring in 1000 boxes to donate to the Chesterfield Food Bank. We will have a giant cereal box domino run in the hallway before we donate :)
Although we only have 3 more weeks of school, we need our sharks here every day (unless they are sick) since the teachers are finishing the curriculum and we are giving our retake and make up SOL tests. We are out of school for Memorial Day Monday, May 27, and only have four days of school after that; then it's summer break and vacation time!

Hello Shark Families,
Teacher Appreciation Week is here! We are so thankful for everything our teachers do for our sharks and we are planning something for them each day this week! Our PTA has created a calendar of items that your child can participate in and that is linked in Shark Bytes. Also, Wednesday is Nurse's Day, and we want to thank Nurse Braxton and Ms. Hodges for taking care of our sharks when they are injured or sick. THANK YOU to our shark teachers and staff!
There have been questions this week regarding yearbooks. Preorders were taken from September through March and the yearbook is currently in production. Those yearbooks will be delivered before school is out. If you did not order, they can be ordered directly through Candid Color once the production is complete and they will be sent to your house. Schools do not order extras. Information will be shared once this year's yearbooks have been published.
Join us Tuesday in the library or online for our PTA Meeting. It's time to vote on our officers for next year! We realize how busy parents are with work and activities, but please join our meetings and volunteer at school events when possible to help our sharks. We appreciate it!
May is moving at warp speed and we have lots of activities in these last four weeks! Please check the calendar to keep up with what's happening when :)
Here are the Shark Bytes for the week ahead!

Hello Shark Families,
THANK YOU for the amazing response for Field Day volunteers! We now have so many that some only have to work for part of the day. Now, we need to ask for help with parking. Due to using all the school property for activities, there are no additional parking areas. If possible, make plans to carpool with a friend or neighbor.
We have now started spring SOL Testing which means the end of the year is upon us! While this is an exciting time, it's important to remember that we must still show our SHARK expectations of Self Control, Honesty, Accountability, Respect and Kindness. In addition to those expectations, here are a few other reminders:
-The bell rings at 8:30. If you drive your shark to school, they should be in their seats when the bell rings, not getting out of the car. It's important that your shark hears morning announcements and participates in activities to start their day off on a positive note as a classroom community.
-Since the weather will be warming up, for safety, your shark should not wear flip flops or slides to school. Students can slide out of these shoes, other students can accidentally step on them, or they can break. They also aren't safe to wear during recess.
-Make sure your shark has a change of clothes in their backpack. Spills and playground accidents can happen with all ages.
-If you need to pick up your shark early, this should be done by 2:30. The office staff is printing absence lists for daycare vans and we are prepping for dismissal past this time.
Here is this week's edition of Shark Bytes. This is a busy time of year so please note the calendar dates.

Hello Shark Families,
This week we begin end of year SOL testing with our 4th and 5th grade sharks and celebrate our fantastic office staff for all they do for our school. Speaking of celebrating, look in Shark Bytes for a flyer from the PTA on how your child can help show appreciation to our teachers the week of May 6-10 :)
The calendar is filling up between now and the end of the school year with lots of fun events. Please check it every week since items and times will be added.
In addition to the fun activities that we have at our school, our sharks have to learn how to respond in emergency situations. We have to complete another lockdown drill, so we will have that drill this week. We will always provide notice to you in advance of this drill. Since school started we have completed fire drills, a tornado drill, an earthquake drill, and bus drills as well. In fact, if the weather agrees, we will complete our last fire drill of the year this week as well.
We are also collecting cereal boxes for our annual Cereal Drive. The Cereal Drive is a fun domino event for our sharks, then all of the boxes are donated to the Chesterfield County Food Bank to help our community.
If you received an invitation to attend Summer School (in your child's report card), please return the slip AND register on ParentVUE.

Also included in this week's Shark Bytes is information for volunteering at Field Day, our SOL testing dates, the date Visitor Lunch ends due to testing, and sending in cereal boxes for our annual Cereal Drive. We set up the boxes for a domino run before donating them to the Chesterfield County Food Bank to help others.

Hello Shark Families,
We hope your Spring Break has been great so far, especially with this beautiful weather we are having! Since a calendar change was made due to the upcoming eclipse, and we have news to share, we thought we would send this message so you can get everything updated and on your calendar.
Please check your email for the links included in this message.
Updates
In consultation with the School Board it was decided that the day we return from Spring Break on Monday, April 8, Chesterfield County schools will dismiss students three hours and 15 minutes early. Families and employees should make arrangements for this change, which is being made out of an abundance of caution in connection to the April 8 solar eclipse and our traditional release times.
-This early dismissal means buses will return students to their bus stops three hours and 15 minutes earlier than scheduled:
-If your school’s regular dismissal is 3:00 p.m., then April 8 dismissal will be 11:45 a.m. If your child does not ride the bus, parent pick up should be completed by 12:00PM, noon. Please make arrangements for someone to be at the bus stop earlier and to pick up your child earlier.
-The decision to close early is connected to the solar eclipse that will cross North America on April 8. Early dismissal will allow time for the safe delivery of students and safe travel of staff members. All after-school activities are canceled for the afternoon of April 8.
Since we had already purchased glasses for each student, they will be sent home in your child's backpack.
-Spirit Day - Panda Express notified the PTA last week that they selected a date for us and it's during Spring Break! Panda Express Spirit Day is Friday, April 5, 10AM-10PM.
-Yearbooks - Candid Color had technical issues with their website last week and has extended the deadline for ordering yearbooks, so please order now if you haven’t. Click here for 23-24 Yearbook Ordering Info - The price is $30 through Spring Break week. If you are a PTA member you get a $5 discount (code emailed to you from the PTA)!
Reminder
Field Day Shirt Info Needed - Dong's Karate is sponsoring our Field Day shirts again this year. We need to get students' sizes ASAP so shirts can be ordered and printed in time for our event. Please fill out this Field Day T-Shirt Size Request form no later than Monday, April 8th. Thank you, Mrs. Latura

When we return from break, there is NO SCHOOL Wednesday, April 10. Please make sure you have these planned days off on your calendar.
While the March Madness continues in basketball, it also continues at school this week with our spirit days! We look forward to continuing the fun with our sharks and have included the schedule :)

Hello Shark Families,
First, a huge thank you to Mrs. Darby for her hard work setting up our artwork at the North Courthouse Library and to all of our shark families who came to see it Thursday night! If you haven't been yet, it's still set up through the end of March.
Come join us Wednesday at Texas Roadhouse for another spirit night! Our last one was a huge success and we look forward to seeing you there!
While our sharks are having fun with our March Madness spirit days, we will all be filling out brackets for basketball next week. If the conference tournaments are any indication, we are already experiencing March Madness since the top teams lost!
Although it's been in Shark Bytes since the fall, we moved the yearbook info to the top of the news since the deadline to order before the price increases is March 28th. After that date, it will be shipped to your house for an added fee. Details for ordering are in Shark Bytes.
Also, our next Early Release Day is this Friday, March 22nd. Students will be dismissed at noon so if your shark doesn't ride the bus, please make arrangements for the earlier pick up at 12:00.

Hello Shark Families,
IMPORTANT REMINDER: There is no school in the building TUESDAY. Due to the presidential primary election and schools being used for voting, your shark will be learning from home Tuesday. Teachers will be uploading assignments to Canvas or sending home work to complete.
We had so much fun during Read Across Smith Week! We love our spirit days, and our sharks looked fantastic dressed as their favorite book characters! The fun doesn't stop there...at Alberta Smith, March Madness is more than basketball. We keep the spirit days going and have added even more this year! The March Madness calendar is linked in Shark Bytes. Team Shark for the win!
The reading fun wasn't just last week. The Book Fair begins this week! In addition to students buying this week, we will also have our Family Night Thursday from 3:30-7. Hello Shark Families,
We have a very important reminder...
There is NO SCHOOL tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 19 to observe Presidents' Day. Please make sure your shark charges their Chromebook Monday night.
We will see your shark at Alberta Smith Tuesday, Feb. 20. If you drop your shark off, we will see you after 8:00 AM. Please do not enter our school parking lot before 8:00 so our staff can get in and we leave Bailey Bridge Road safe for drivers and not create a line that blocks emergency vehicles. Thank you!
You can now order our student designed spirit wear!

Hello Shark Families,
Kindness Week is here! We have made this an annual event at Alberta Smith but now it is the same as Kindness Week across the state! Each day showcases a different theme and we have incorporated spirit days as well. Thank you for planning the fun ways to show kindness, Ms. Bujakowski and Mrs. Matlick!
Our kickoff to Kindness Week, the SOUP-ER bowl, will actually continue until Tuesday when the Food Bank comes to pick up our box. The box they gave us is the largest they have, and we don't have many cans donated so far. Please send in cans so our sharks can model showing kindness to our community.
Our monthly PTA Meeting is Tuesday, in person or joining in on Google Meet. Also this week, the PTA is sponsoring our annual dance and game event. This year that game is glow Putt Putt! The deadline for purchasing tickets is tomorrow at 5 PM. Details are in Shark Bytes.
The School Board voted on the calendar change for March 5. This will be an Asynchronous Day to allow voting for the Presidential Primary to happen in schools. Your child will have assignments to complete at home that day.

Hello Shark Families,
What fun we had Friday celebrating the 100th Day of School! Our sharks participated in a scavenger hunt and while dressing up was certainly not mandatory, it was great walking around the halls and seeing our shark community dressed from different decades. More dress up spirit days are coming during Kindness Week in a couple of weeks, Read Across Smith at the end of February/beginning of March, and during March Madness.
Report Cards came home Friday. Since grades can be checked regularly through ParentVue, you no longer have to sign the report card or send it back. We do ask that you please send back the envelope it comes home in so we will have it to send future report cards.
February 5-9 is School Counselor Week. Please join us in thanking Mrs. Matlick and Ms. Bujakowski (Ms. B) for all they do for our sharks. We certainly appreciate them!!
Our Chorus Sharks will be performing Tuesday at the Pyramid Concert. We wish them the best!
At the end of this week, we have another spirit night - Chuck E. Cheese is Friday after school until 9 PM.
We've received and added the flier for our spring pictures from Candid Color. They will be taken February 29 for those who have prepaid and those who were absent in the fall. Everyone will be photographed for the group pictures.
Also, we've had cars start lining up and parking in our spaces before 8 AM. Please do not arrive early. Our staff needs to be able to arrive and park in the lot and we need to keep Bailey Bridge safe without having a line of cars. The line can block emergency vehicles and we need to keep the entrance clear.

Hello Shark Families,
It's hard to believe that Friday we will be celebrating the 100th Day of School! We're going to have options for our sharks to dress up if they would like. Please look in Shark Bytes for all the ideas. Also on Friday, Square 1 permission slips are due. You will be able to purchase your student's art keepsakes if you wish, but you have to give permission for us to release your child's artwork to the Square 1 company. Report Cards will come home that day too!
In addition to the fun activities that we have at our school, our sharks have to learn how to respond in emergency situations. We have to complete another lockdown drill, so we will have that drill Monday (tomorrow). Our kindergarten sharks didn't have to participate in the fall but will be participating in the two that we do the second semester of the school year. We will always notify you at least a day in advance of this drill. Since school started we have completed fire drills, a tornado drill, an earthquake drill, and bus drills as well.
There are always two pages to our newsletter. Under the PTA section, there is a sign up for Watch D.O.G.S., a link to order yearbooks, and a link to order spirit wear. Each year there are students who say they don't want a yearbook until they arrive. While they will be available after the March 28th deadline, there will be an increase in cost since Candid Color will be shipping to your home. Also, the dates and locations for the CCPS budget town hall meetings are listed on page 2. If you can't attend the one for our Matoaca district Tuesday, there will be one at Clover Hill High Monday.
