As a reminder, there is NO SCHOOL tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 25th.

We want to start with a huge THANK YOU for attending our Back to School Nights! This was an opportunity for you to hear more about academics and expectations of the grade level. In November we will have parent conferences where you will be able to speak to the teacher about your child specifically. If you can't attend in person due to work obligations, we will be scheduling virtual conference times as well.

Speaking of virtual...our first PTA meeting of the year will be Tuesday, Oct. 10th. If you can't attend in person, we will continue to offer a virtual option so that you can join from your home, child's dance lessons, ball field, anywhere! THANK YOU to those who have joined the PTA already. When you join, we can provide more resources for our sharks AND your child's class then has a chance to win an ice cream party!

School pictures were taken this week and we realize not everyone was at school Thursday. As soon as we receive the date for the make up/retake day, we will let you know.

Here are the Family Shark Bytes for the week ahead. We look forward to seeing your shark Tuesday!

This week we will participate in Start With Hello Week, a national call-to-action event for schools dedicated to kindness, inclusion, and making connections. We will make this our first spirit week of the year, so please click on the link in Shark Bytes to see what we will wear and the meaning behind it.

We look forward to seeing our K-2 parents at Back to School Night Tuesday! Doors will open at 6 PM and you will go directly to the classroom. If you've not joined the PTA yet, you will have a chance that evening.

Thursday is Picture Day and everyone will be photographed since these are the yearbook photos. Candid Color recommends wearing solid, bright colors (the background is blue). We will show our best shark smiles :)

Also, grades 3-5 continue their fall SOL testing this week in math. The days are listed on the Shark Bytes calendar.

Hello Shark Families,

After two four day weeks, we are now gearing up for a five day week again!

Our Back to School Night for the parents of our 3rd-5th grade sharks will be this Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 6 PM. We will start in the cafeteria where we will discuss a few school items and learn more about the PTA. Speaking of our 3rd-5th grade sharks, they will be taking the fall reading SOL growth assessment this week. The state has moved to a growth model and we now test in the fall, winter, and spring so we can measure your child's academic growth throughout the year.

Safety is our top priority and to insure that our sharks are prepared for emergencies we have multiple fire, lockdown, bus, earthquake, and tornado drills each year. You will be notified at least 24 hours before we have a lockdown drill so that you are aware it is indeed a drill. We will be having our first lockdown drill of the school year Friday this week for our sharks in grades 1-5. Our kindergarten sharks will not participate in a lockdown drill until January.

Here are our Shark Bytes for the week ahead. New items this week include: a Gelati Celeste Spirit Night Wednesday, a classroom competition for the class that has the most PTA members, a NEW Google Form for letting us know if your child will be absent, and a chart that tells you who to reach out to in which situations. Please read all of the announcements since they also relate to student safety and who we contact in case of emergency.

Hello Shark Families,

We already have 9 days of school completed before the Labor Day weekend! We are getting settled into our routines and being reminded of our Shark Expectations. Please review these expectations with your shark by asking them what they mean (they are listed in Shark Bytes).

Here are your Family Shark Bytes for the week ahead. Note the links at the top for items you need to refer to regularly. Please read the Handbook which contains CCPS and school specific information (including when visitor lunch begins). There are also links for the PTA, CCPS, Canvas, ParentVUE, and weekly lunch menus. In addition to the PTA link, there will be PTA News listed each week. This week we have added ordering information for the yearbook.

Our Back to School Nights are quickly approaching! The Meet and Greet provided the opportunity for you and your shark to meet the teacher and drop off school supplies. Back to School Night is an opportunity for teachers to discuss academics and expectations with parents and guardians. Please note that the first Back to School Night, Sept. 12, is for parents of students in grades 3-5 and the next week, Sept. 19 is for parents of students in grades K-2. We will begin in the cafeteria then move to classrooms to hear from teachers.

Enjoy the rest of this long weekend and we will see your shark Tuesday!

We forgot to post last week's Shark Bytes so here is the August 27th edition...today's will follow.

Hello Shark Families,

We had a FANTASTIC first week of school! It was wonderful seeing our sharks' smiling faces return to the building :)

Thank you for your patience with the buses as some were later than others. Now that we're starting to get settled in, and with safety being our priority, we have discussed parent drop off and pick up in this week's Smith Family Shark Bytes. Bailey Bridge is a very busy road in the morning with five schools being within a few miles of each other. We need to get our staff and students in safely without causing a traffic line on Bailey Bridge. Please do not arrive in the parking lot (loop or parking spaces) before 8 and pick up your sharks by 3:15 each day. Please also read about dismissal changes and picking up your shark early. All of these items are in our Parent Handbook which is linked at the top of Shark Bytes.

We are looking forward to having ALL of our sharks at school this week. As a reminder, there is NO SCHOOL Friday this week or Monday of next week. Those dates will always be listed in the calendar section.

Good afternoon Shark Families,

Our last bus, 341, just left at 3:50.

Thank you and have a great evening!

Smith Family Shark Bytes 8-20 08/21/2023

Hello Shark Families,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! It was wonderful seeing you Thursday evening, and we hope you have enjoyed this last weekend before school starts. Smith Family Shark Bytes will be emailed every Sunday at 5 PM and will include a calendar for the week, upcoming events, announcements, and links where you can find school and CCPS information. This week, Shark Bytes is a little longer as we are including information about transportation, dropping off your shark, and the PTA. We realize that there is a lot of information at this time of year and many of you have children at multiple schools, so we are highlighting some of the most important things in this week's message.

-The buses will be running late the first few days of school. This happens every year as drivers are learning their routes and there is added time due to traffic.

-We need your help if you are dropping off your shark at school. Please do not arrive before 8:00 AM (8:10 is preferred) in the loop or in parking spaces. Arriving earlier to sit and wait creates the line that backs up to Bailey Bridge Road, makes the wait time longer, prevents our staff from being able to get into the parking lot, and blocks emergency vehicles. In fact, the front loop is the fire lane and cannot be used for parking - only drop off and pick up. If you arrive on time, we can flow and go!

-ALL STUDENTS in grades K-5 must be dropped off in the front loop. The gravel lot by the bus loop is reserved for our youngest sharks that are 3 and 4 years old and need more assistance getting out of the car. More drop off information is included in the link in Shark Bytes, so please review that information as well.

-The doors open and students enter the building at 8:10 each day. The tardy bell rings at 8:30. Students should be in their classroom seats when the bell rings at 8:30. Allowing your shark to ride the bus means they will never be counted tardy. If you bring your shark to school and there are no adults standing outside, your shark is tardy and you must park in the lot, then walk and sign them in.

-If you are picking your shark up from school, please do not arrive in the parking lot before 2:45 for dismissal. A line will quickly back up Bailey Bridge Road since, as stated above, the front loop is also our fire lane and cannot be used for parking - only drop off and pick up. Emergency vehicles must have access. Thank you for your help.

-Due to the time required to prepare for dismissal and series reading occurring two afternoons a week, no early dismissals will occur after 2:30 PM.

-Please read the Parent Handbook that is linked at the top of Shark Bytes. Details are given about all Alberta Smith topics :)

Here are your Shark Bytes for the first week of this fabulous school year!

Hello Shark Families,

In addition to making sure those school supplies are ready, we can't forget our electronic supply - Chromebooks! The following message was in the CCPS Friday Family Update but we wanted to be sure you had the information:

To help students show up ready to learn at the start of school, now is the time to make sure Chromebooks are working. Here’s what to do:

-Locate your child’s Chromebook and charger.

-Plug in the Chromebook, and charge it up.

-Check for major damage.

If the Chromebook is damaged or not working, then the technology team is ready to help! Starting Aug. 7, there are dozens of technical support sessions to help all families. Bring the problem Chromebook to any middle school or high school during service desk hours.

All families can get Chromebook help at the site and time that is most convenient. If the dates and times do not work for you, then please don’t worry: Your child will be able to get Chromebook help when school starts. If your children are new to Chesterfield County Public Schools, then they will receive Chromebooks when they start school. Questions? Contact the help desk at 804-639-8933.

This will take place on Wednesday, August 9th from 8am to 12 noon in the cafeteria.

The sign up is here if you’re interested and available to help.

Classroom Placements - While you might be able to see your child's teacher name this week in ParentVUE, please remember that we are still registering students and may need to make changes to placements. The phone call Wednesday, Aug. 16th, will be from your child's teacher who you will meet Thursday, Aug. 17th. *If your child is in Mrs. Hugenberg's 4th Grade Class, you will hear from her this week. Her Meet and Greet will be Wednesday, Aug. 16th since she has to move her child to college the next day. Thank you for understanding :)

Hello Shark Families,

We could not have asked for better weather for Field Day! Thank you to those who volunteered so that we could have many activities for our sharks; thank you to our PTA for providing Kona Ice; and a huge thank you to Mrs. Latura for all of her planning, organizing, and for walking around the whole day delivering water to our volunteers! It was a fantastic day!

We have several family events this week! Tuesday evening is our night at the Clover Hill Library to kick off summer reading, and Wednesday is our Buy One Get One (BOGO) Book Fair Family Night in the gym. We are having Skate a Way night Thursday...look in Shark Bytes for the times for these events.

As we enter the last two weeks of school, we want to keep as much structure as possible. This week we had lots of tardies and early dismissals. If your shark doesn't ride the bus, they should be in their seats when the bell rings. What may seem like only a few minutes has them walking into class after the teacher has already begun the day. Please remind your shark, as we are, to following our expectations each day. Self control, Honesty, Accountability, Respect and Kindness should be shown everywhere in the building and while on the bus so our fun events will be fun for all.

Hello Shark Families,

We want to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all of our Shark Moms. Thank you for all you do!

We have a sports week coming up as well as our last PTA Meeting of the year and our last whole grade level SOL Test (make ups and retakes continue). Information about the Flying Squirrels Game is in Shark Bytes and Field Day information was shared with volunteers by Mrs. Latura. Please remember that due to parking availability and for the safety of our sharks, visitors are not allowed on Field Day - only volunteers who are registered through the office. Please make sure your child comes to school with sunscreen on, wearing appropriate clothes and sneakers, and brings a water bottle, hat, sunglasses, etc. Students will get their FREE field day shirt on Friday and will change into it before Field Day starts.

Also, don't forget our Cereal Drive! Our goal is to bring in 1000 boxes to donate to the Chesterfield Food Bank. We will have a giant cereal box domino run in the hallway before we donate :)

Although we only have 3 more weeks of school, we need our sharks here every day (unless they are sick) since the teachers are finishing the curriculum. We are out of school for Memorial Day Monday, May 29, and only have four days of school after that; then it's summer break and vacation time!

Smith Family Shark Bytes 5-7 05/07/2023

Hello Shark Families,

Teacher Appreciation Week is here! We are so thankful for everything our teachers do for our sharks and we are planning something for them each day this week! Our PTA has created a calendar of items that your child can participate in and that is linked in Shark Bytes. Also, Wednesday is Nurse's Day, and we want to thank Nurse Braxton for taking care of our sharks when they are injured or sick. THANK YOU to our shark teachers and staff!

Last week I asked that you make sure to put extra clothes in your child's backpack in case of an accident. We had extra clothes in the clinic but they have all been used, and we have no more for students in case of an emergency. Each week in Shark Bytes we ask to put clothes that no longer fit in our bins in the parking lot. We could use any extra clothes that fit our sharks in the clinic if you would donate them there instead. We appreciate it greatly!

Speaking of the clinic, we've had some questions regarding getting sick at school and when to return. The sick day guidelines are from the CCPS handbook which is posted on the CCPS webpage. "Children should not attend school if they have vomiting and/or diarrhea. The child should remain home until 24 hours after the last instance of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Seek medical advice if vomiting and/or diarrhea continues and a child is unable to keep down liquids." If your child is well, we need them here all day every day as teachers are still teaching the curriculum and assessing the growth they have made this year.

Another question we have gotten this week is regarding yearbooks. Preorders were taken from October through April and the yearbook is currently in production. Those yearbooks will be delivered before school is out. If you did not order, they can be ordered directly through Candid Color once the production is complete and they will be sent to your house. Schools do not order extras.

May is moving at warp speed and we have lots of activities in these last four weeks! Please check the calendar to keep up with what's happening when :)

Smith Family Shark Bytes 4-30 04/30/2023

Hello Shark Families,

We have now started spring SOL Testing which means the end of the year is upon us! While this is an exciting time, it's important to remember that we must still show our SHARK expectations of Self Control, Honesty, Accountability, Respect and Kindness. In addition to those expectations, here are a few other reminders:

-The bell rings at 8:30 (actually 8:29 but it loses a minute every time we have it reset). If you drive your shark to school, they should be in their seats when the bell rings, not getting out of the car. This week we had lots of late sharks. We know that Friday was a bad weather and late bus day, but there were lots of tardies the other days too. It's important that your shark hears morning announcements and is in the class morning meeting to start their day off on a positive note as a classroom community.

-For safety, your shark should not wear flip flops or slides to school. Students can slide out of these shoes, other students can accidentally step on them, or they can break. They also aren't safe to wear during recess.

Smith Family Shark Bytes 4-16 04/17/2023

Hello Shark Families,

This is a busy week at Alberta Smith! We have kindergarten registration with our newest sharks coming into the building for the first time since 2019! We also have several field trips. If your shark is going on a field trip that is leaving before school and returns after school hours, please read the drop off and pick up information shared by the teacher for all the details.

Also included in this week's Shark Bytes is information for volunteering at Field Day, a link for sending in goodies for Teacher Appreciation Week, our SOL testing dates, signing up for our summer Camp Invention, and sending in cereal boxes for our third annual Cereal Drive. We set up the boxes for a domino run before donating them to the Chesterfield County Food Bank to help others.

On a personal note, Mrs. Kline's son is having knee surgery Monday and she will be out at least Monday and Tuesday next week. She was out a couple of days last week for meetings but will be out again next week and will miss seeing our sharks.

Here is this week's edition of Shark Bytes.
