The magenta line had the day off.
Today, Wes and Toto took our 182 back to basics for an instructor-proficiency session focused on DME arcs and localizer back-course approaches, flown on green needles and raw data.
With a G3X Touch, GTN 750Xi, GTN 650Xi, and GFC 500 in the panel, it would have been easy to let the avionics do most of the thinking. Instead, we used the airplane’s modern equipment to practice some decidedly old-school instrument flying.
Why? Because good IFR training is not just about knowing which buttons to push. It is about understanding what the avionics are doing, recognizing when something does not look right, and still being able to fly accurately when the magenta line is unavailable, or simply told to sit this one out.
The Xis were reportedly offended, but Wes’ raw-data skills are officially refreshed. 😄
At Virginia IFR Academy, our instructors keep training, too. ✈️
