Career & College Advisers play a vital role in helping Midland County students explore their options, plan for their futures, and navigate the path to postsecondary education and career success. Through one-on-one support, family engagement, and a commitment to reducing barriers, they help ensure every learner has access to opportunities beyond high school. Today, we’d like you to meet Midland High School Advisor, Lori Pritchard, in her own words.
“Prior to retiring, I always worked directly with middle and high school students, and that has consistently been my favorite part of education. Serving as a College & Career Advisor has allowed me to continue doing what I enjoy most—working one-on-one with students while providing guidance, encouragement, and support as they navigate important decisions about their futures. It is especially rewarding to help those who need it most.”
My favorite part of this job is working directly with students. Honestly, I enjoy every aspect of being a College & Career Advisor, but the most rewarding moments start at the beginning of the school year when I sit down one-on-one with students who are still trying to figure out their plans after high school. Whether they're considering college, the military, a trade, or entering the workforce, it's incredibly fulfilling to help them explore their options and build a plan that fits their goals and interests. Students are often grateful to have someone who will listen, answer their questions, and guide them through such an important decision. Knowing that I can provide encouragement, clarity, and support during this pivotal time in their lives is what makes this work so meaningful to me.”
One piece of advice I consistently give students is to focus on taking one step forward at a time. Many students become overwhelmed by the pressure of deciding what comes after high school, and that uncertainty can sometimes keep them from moving forward. I encourage them to break the process into smaller, manageable steps. Each completed application, campus visit, conversation, or career exploration activity builds momentum and confidence.
I also remind students to never stop investing in themselves. Whether it's earning a certification, developing a new skill, gaining work experience, or continuing their education, every skill and credential they acquire makes them more marketable, more employable, and better prepared for future opportunities. Those are investments in themselves that no one can ever take away.
I wish more students and families knew that they don't have to navigate the college and career planning process alone. There are so many resources available... from exploring careers and colleges to completing financial aid applications, and finding scholarships. My goal is to walk alongside students through each step of the process. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to help a student feel more confident and realize they have options they hadn't considered.”
